Peter Frampton came out on stage wearing a smile that never left. It seemed clear to all that Frampton was still loving his job and doing what he loved to do. Still a bit of a rebel, midway through the concert Frampton encouraged the audience to move forward from their seats and join him at the front of the stage, much to the dismay of the security. When security tried to send the crowd back to their seats, Frampton left the stage and would not return until the fans were allowed to remain up front with him. He was determined, it seemed, to make this event a true rock 'n' roll party. With the crowd standing and up front, the music eventually continued. In a time of extreme tension and tight security measures, it felt good to see so many people momentarily forgetting the outside world and enjoying a little taste of that rock 'n' roll freedom that we all enjoyed so much years ago, when Frampton topped the charts and headlined massive stadiums and ballparks our own Comisky Park. A quick scan of the Grant Park audience digging the tunes that Frampton was laying down for them, revealed that his music was truly timeless and capable of spanning generations. Aside from those graying and balding rockers who came of age to songs like "Do Fell Like I Do" and "Show Me The Way," there were teenagers who knew the words and young toddlers dancing on their daddy's shoulders. But don't be fooled into believing Frampton has rested on his past. He is still making powerful music and treated fans to a few newer numbers inbetween the many hits they had come to hear. Frampton has always "come alive" for his fans when he hits a concert stage, and this free show in Grant Park was no exception. He was clearly feeling great, playing great and having a grand time on his visit to Chicago. He was smiling big and toothy as he sang, "Do you feel like I do?" And it was clear from the dancing, singing and the sea of smiles being returned to him, that indeed we all felt the same! It was a truly a great concert. | |||
