On a clear and warm night in May, Debbie Harry and company (Jimmy Destri, Clem Burke, Leigh Foxx, Chris Stein and Paul Carbonara) hit the stage rockin’ at the House of Blues (HOB) in Chicago.

Everyone remembers Debbie as a sexy former Playboy Bunny turned punk rocker.  But this is 2004, and it seems that Debbie has traded her female sex symbol role for a more “house wife punk” look. That’s to her credit.  Harry turns 59 this year and realizes that at her age, it’s hard to be a convincing sex kitten.  However Harry still exudes the same kind of sex appeal that we have all grown to love over the years.  She is just a more mature and stately kind of sexy these days.

She came on stage wearing a tux-like jean jacket with a jewel-studded mic in her hand.   The mic stand also had jewels on the base and she was wearing matching jeweled belt around her waist.

You could see in her performance that Harry is still a young rocker at heart.  She started the set with “Atomic,” “Dreaming” and “Hanging on the Telephone.”   The night’s set list was rife with hits and fan favorites like –– “X-Offender,” “Union City Blues,” and “One Way Or Another.”

But far from being a mere retro show, the band showed itself to be a contemporary music force still to be reckoned with, as they pumped out a bevy latter day Blondie tunes from their most recent albums, No Exit and The Curse Of Blondie.

Among those were their 2002 comeback radio hit, “Maria,” and their current single, “Good Boy.”

During the song “Accidents Never Happen,” Jimmy dropped one of his keyboards and as Debbie bent over to pick it up the crowd went absolutely nuts.  As I wrote earlier…still very sexy!

At the beginning of “Rapture,” Debbie started to get a bit funky with her singing and dancing.  The crowd started having fun with Debbie,  passing things to her like hearts and roses.  Debbie, then would take these items and showed the band.  This all stopped once a white rose was passed up to her. Harry put the rose into her mouth and spit it out into the crowd, who again went nuts.  After that, the song got more hard hitting as Chris  Stein stepped up to play some tasty leads and a solo, followed by a complete musical break down leaving only Debbie rapping away. This faded into the chorus of Chic’s (“La Freak”). She ended the night with the Ramones “Pet Semetary” and their disco-flavored trademark number, “Heart of Glass.”

Overall, the Chicago House Of Blues crowd left the show that night happy and satisfied in the knowledge that the band had given them their absolute best.

A night with Blondie is always a fun way to spend a few idle hours.  They leave you sweating and smiling…just as they have always done.
