The Riviera Theatre was the happening hot spot in the Windy City for rock ‘n’ rollers on this May night.   The musical flavor was a double scoop of hard rock.  Starting off with a  serving of Silvertide, followed by a healthy helping of Velvet Revolver.

Often the type of music or show to expect, can be deduced by a quick glance at those attending. The theory was not applicable at this event.  The fans were anything other than typical. The vast array of personalities in the lobby, was astounding. The apparel for the evening was extermely varied, ranging from studded leather to formal GQ, tank tees to dress shirts, baseball caps to cowboy hats, dreadlocks to shaved heads, geeks to freaks, it was all there.  All sorts of fans had gathered and were producing an invigorating conversational buzz.

The lights flickered then dimmed, bringing a reverent wave of silence over the venue.  As Silvertide stepped on stage, a roaring cheer overtook the stillness.

Silvertide provides an energetic  unique interpretation of rmusic, the perfect prelude for the event.  They put the scent of rock ‘n’ roll into the air so to speak, and aptly whet the appetites of rock animals who had gathered this night for the feast.

As as Velvet Revolver appeared a short while later, a massive cheer saturated the warm, smoke-filled air.  The opening selection, “Set Me Free”, started the energy flowing immediately to and fro between the band and it’s audience.

What was happening on stage as these veteran players came together to present this brand new union, was both stimulating and overwhelming.  Slash proficiently plucking, picking, strumming and sliding guitar strings with the skill of a vascular surgeon.  His guitar responding sweetly to his stroking, purring like an affectionate lynx.

The selection “Headspace” is well titled.  The music moves in a designated direction, while the vocals and lyrics widen the parameters expanding the effect. This song could be considered progressive hard rock.

The music of Velvet Revolver is an evolution of the old Guns ‘N Roses sound, with just enough of Scott Weiland’s trademark Stone Temple Pilots inflections to make it interesting and decidedly fresh.

For those who have been living under a rock the past year and missed the buzz on this supergroup of Guns ‘N Pilots, the line up consists of –– Slash (guitarist), Duff McKagan (bassist), Dave Kushner (guitarist), Matt Sorum (drummer), and Scott Weiland (vocalist).

Together these guys are phenomenal. Their interpretation and manipulation of musical concepts and elements in conjunction with the high-energy performance, dominates the audience.

Velvet Revolver is a multifaceted  multi-talented musical group, they are a brilliant combination of skill and desire that can satiate a severe Rock and Roll appetite.

Velvet Revolver really delivers a top notch hard rock show!
