Power pop/punk rockers The Dollyrots tear up Chicago!

The California trio, The Dollyrots, are currently on tour promoting their brand new sophomore album Because I’m Awesome. The album is packed with songs that are quite contagious and their live act is even more addicting. As soon as band took the stage, lead singer/bassist Kelly tore into the opening bass lines to open the set with their song Out Of L.A which bounced right into the fist-pumping song My Best Friend’s Hot. Blue-haired guitarist Luis showed-off some great licks and handled the background vocals sharply while drummer Chris kept things rocking as they performed another winner Hysteria. While most of their songs deal with relationships, they did perform Desparate S.O.S. which deals with issues like global warming, and other current political issues. Kelly sings the lyrics in super-speed, so listen closely. The band also performed Jackie Chan off of their first album.

The night kept getting better as the band broke into Brand New Key, which has all the elements of a perfect pop/punk song. It starts out slowly and gradually speeds up to fast motion. The lyrics are fun and the crowd rocked with it as Kelly sang; I got a brand new pair of roller skates/You got a brand new key/I think that we should get together and try them out you see/I’ve been searching around awhile/You got something I need/Whoa!

Another crowd favorite was the performance of This Crush, as the drums and bass kicked in; Kelly sings seductively of a relationship that only one person is really in. This Crush is dangerous/I know he has no love for me/ No oh oh/wha oh oh. The Dollyrots ended the night performing their anthem song Because I’m Awesome. This song has all the elements of being a smash hit. The lyrics are completely crazed, making this one fun song to sing along with. I’m a leader/I’m a winner/And I’m Cleaner/Cause I’m Awesome/I don’t need you/Cause I’m neato/And I beat you/Cause I’m Awesome.

In an exclusive backstage interview with Midwest Beat Magazine, Kelly, Luis, and Chris were siked about having Joan Jett sign them to her Blackheart label. They recently performed in Austin, TX at SXSW and Joan Jett came on stage and performed a song with them. Kelly, who just recently made a guest appearance on CSI, said that the band loved working with rock producer (and Joan Jett’s long time manager) Kenny Laguna. Luis added that Kenny was responsible for helping produce their latest album and that he helped add different sound effects to many songs. One example is if you listen closely to Because I’m Awesome, the band is literally barking in the background. Chris added that with Kenny’s expertise and longevity in the business, he added some punch to many of their songs. Kelly expressed excitement when she revealed they will be meeting again with Kenny in the studio soon to record some acoustic tracks and remixes.

For a special Q&A with Kelly, see the April –May 2007 issue of Midwest Beat Magazine and live concert shots of the band at SXSW.

Be on the look-out for The Dollyrots. They are currently on tour and hitting a town near you soon. Also, pick-up a copy of their latest album. This is one you can listen to without hitting your skip button on your remote. You want to know why? Because it’s awesome!
