After waiting a year
since the release of her newest album, The Emancipation of Mimi,
Mariah Carey appeared at the United Center on September 11th
in her Adventures of Mimi tour. There is no doubt that Mariah Carey has
made a comeback, and a big one at that. After her album was named best
in the R&B category at the 2006 Grammy Awards, Mariah is keeping the
momentum on tour.
The show was a spectacle lights, much like a Las Vegas
production. There was never a moment when the stage was not filled with
dancers, backup singers, sparkling backdrops, and flashing screens.
Mariah made sure to provide the audience with a well-blended variety of
songs from The Emancipation of Mimi, including “It’s Like That”
and “Shake It Off,” and her greatest hits from the 1990s, like “Vision
of Love” and “Fantasy.”
With a total of four
barely-there costumes, she definitely didn’t leave much to the
imagination. But even without such an extravagant stage production,
Mariah Carey would have wowed the crowd with her voice alone. Perhaps
all the glitz and glam were more of a distraction than an asset in her
overall performance. Nevertheless, Mariah rose above it all and
emancipated herself in an outstanding performance.
The show concluded with
a thoughtful tribute to the victims of 9/11 and their family members.
Sean Paul opened the evening with his usual warm-up routine to get the
crowd on their feet and ready to see Mariah’s performance. Sean Paul is
currently on tour promoting a new album.
