KENNY LOGGINS Chicago Theatre / Chicago, IL August 19, 2003 Review by Anita Lande As
the packed Chicago Theater crowd waited for Kenny Loggins to start the
show, there was quite a buzz in the air because Kenny's long awaited CD,
"It's About Time" was just released. It's been nearly six years that Loggins fans have waited to hear new music from Kenny, and the celebrated singer/songwriter is happilly performing it, along with his classic hits, during a series of co-headlining late summer dates with '80s pop duo –– Hall & Oates. Before the show started, Chicago's own Richard Marx's took a prime seat about five rows from the stage. Being curious, I approached him and asked him what he has been up to in the last couple of years. As it turned out, Marx helped produce Loggins' new albums and even co-wrote Kenny's brand new single. He also told me he is writing new material for his own upcoming CD. As I went back to my seat, my mind was hoping that maybe, just possibly, Richard might take the stage with Kenny? When Kenny appeared, he was wearing black leather pants and a very loose fitting blue shirt that hung out, and I could not help thinking that it just did not fit his slim build to well. Aside from his wardrobe, Kenny performed to a tee. This is a musician made it clear from the onset, that he gives his all on every single song he sings. One lucky girl sitting in the front row was handed a free copy of Kenny's new CD after he displayed it proudly to the very receptive Chicago Theater crowd. Kenny did a nice mixture of brand new tunes along with many of his hits from the past. He opened with the latest CD's title cut, "It's About Time", which is a good-time feeling, up beat song. Though it was a new song, several fans already had the words down and it proved to be a perfect springboard into the evening's repertoire. Other songs performed included –– "Nobody's Fool," "Return to Pooh Corner," "Celebrate Me Home," "Whenever I Call You Friend" and the favorite crowd sing-a-long, "Danny's Song." Then the time came to sing "With This Ring" and Kenny told the audience that this new song was co-written by hometown pop idol, Richard Marx. And yes, Richard did come on stage and performed the number as a duet with Kenny, which received a tremendous response. Richard was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans and he looked excited to be on stage again. Of course, the show would not be complete without hearing Loggins' classic movie hits, "Danger Zone" and "Footloose." At this point the crowd was on their collective feet dancing, singing, and just having one heck of a great time. Loggin's songs have enduring popularity and sound as fresh today as they did when he debuted them many years ago. And his new material is quite lively and upbeat compared to some of his other material from his last few albums. Everyone attending this show definitely did cut footloose by the evening's end. |
