ILLINOIS’ FIRST LADY READS TO CHILDREN...

Illinois’ First Lady, Patti Blagojevich, visited Border’s Books & Music Michigan Avenue store last month, where she read to children ages 6-12 from Kate DiCamillo’s Newbery Award-winning book, Tales of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread, and announced a brand new initiative.

BACHELORETTE’s BLYTH AUTHORS NEW BOOK...

Original Bachelorette contestant, Chicago’s Jamie Blyth made an appearance at Border's Michigan Avenue store discussed and signed his important new book, “Fear Is No Longer My Reality”.

This is Blyth’s powerful story behind the reality star’s TV image – and a message of hope and healing for the 20 million Americans who suffer from social anxiety disorder.

As one of the finalists on ABC-TV’s reality dating show “The Bachelorette,” Blyth risked his heart before millions, while going public with his personal struggle against social anxiety and panic disorder, in the hopes of helping those who continue to suffer in silence.

 McCOO & DAVIS ENDURE...

Legendary vocalists Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. discussed and signed their new book –– “Up, Up, And Away” –  at Border’s Michigan Ave. store.

“This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius...”, or so the song went.  Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., are best known for their days as stars in the pop group 5th Dimension. “The Age of Aquarius”, “Wedding Bell Blues”, and “Up, Up, and Away” propelled them to the top of the charts.

For those who don’t believe that Hollywood marriages can last, meet Marilyn and Billy. Amidst the Hollywood glamour and lifestyle, they fell in love and got married, but their marriage was far from bliss. Polar opposite backgrounds and clashing personalities made the journey difficult for a couple whose career success had come so easily.

This book goes behind the closed doors of pain and emptiness to the dawning of the truth in their lives.

WAITE ROCKS THE HARD WAY ACOUSTICALLY...

Singer John Waite performed live and signed his new CD at the Border’s Books & Music (Broadway & Lawrence) in Uptown.  The British rocker performed an acoustic set with his guitarist Jimmy Leahey in support of his new CD, The Hard Way.  Waite had a string of hits in the ‘70s and ‘80s when he fronted the band, The Babys.

 TORI COMES TO TOWN...

From her critically acclaimed 1992 debut, Little Earthquakes, to her recent hits, Scarlet’s Walk and Beekeeper, Tori Amos has been a formidable force in contemporary music, with one of the most dedicated fan bases in the industry. In “Tori Amos: Piece by Piece”, the singer herself takes readers beyond the mere facts, explaining the specifics of her creative process—how her songs go from ideas and melodies to recordings and passionately performed concert pieces.

Written with acclaimed music journalist Ann Powers, “Tori Amos: Piece by Piece”, is a firsthand account of the most intricate and intimate details of Amos’ life as both a private individual and a very public performing musician. In passionate and informative prose, Amos explains how her songs evolution and how she records and then performs them, all the while connecting with listeners across the world and maintaining her own family life (including raising a young daughter).

But it is also much more, a verbal collage made by two strong female voices—and the voices of those closest to Amos—that calls upon genealogy, myth, and folklore to express Amos’ unique and fascinating personal history. In short, we see the pieces that make up—as Amos herself puts it—“the woman we call Tori.”

 FINANCIAL GURU VISITS “THE APPLE”...

Discussion and signing for “The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke” brought Chicago native and Financial Guru Suze Orman to the Apple Computer Store on North Michigan Avenue last month.

Financial expert Orman is the answer to a generation’s cry for help. They are called “Generation Debt” and “Generation Broke” by the media-people, referring to most people in their twenties and thirties who graduate from college with a mountain of student loan debt and facing one of the weakest job markets in recent history.

The goals of their parents’ generation –– buy a house, support a family, send kids to college, retire in style –– seem absurdly, depressingly out of reach.

They live off their credit cards, may or may not have health insurance, and come up so far short at the end of the month that the idea of saving money is a joke. This generation has it tough, without a doubt, but they're also painfully aware of the urgent need to take matters into their own hands.

Orman drew a standing room-only audience as she discussed her new book to a group that ranged from pre-teens to seniors...fans.
