One Guy’s Rambling Thoughts…

LOTS OF GREAT EVENTS PLANNED

Spring is here at last and I for one, can not wait to shake off the doldrums of this past winter.

Though we have some fun during the cold weather months with events like the Region Rumble and our annual Holiday Bash, it’s the Spring and Summer that really get us rocking!   That is no different this year.

Midwest BEAT will be hosting a ton of fun stuff in the coming weeks and months ahead.  Some will be our own Bash-style shows and some will be events produced with others, including co-promotions with the Radisson Hotel, X-Rock, Night Rock and others.

Though all the details to all the events are not yet chiseled in stone, here are a few cool parties and things coming up sooner than later...

As always, Midwest BEAT strongly encourages artists to make their own original music.  That said, we plan to once again host a new series of “Original Music Showcases”, a term that we have used for many years, which seems to have been appropriated by a few others lately.  That is okay with us though, because it means others are finally starting to get behind original local music.

Anyway, our first such event will be co-sponsored by Night Rock Radio/X-ROCK 103.9 and takes place at 9:30pm on April 22 at 2nd Dimension (340 E. U.S. 30) in Schererville, IN.

That April 22 show will also be the official CD release party for the rising young band, Farewell To February.  Joining The Febs will be a pair of groups from the Region Rumble line-up –– Echofarm and S.O.

In May, Midwest BEAT will host parties at two places we’ve not visited in many, many years.

The first is Highland, Indiana’s Backstreet Grill & Sports Bar (2712 Condit Street).  Old school region rockers will remember this venue as the old Hideout Saloon (1970s) and later Danny’s Place (1980s). As a young pup in the 1980s, I once filmed a weekly local cable television show –– “Live At Danny’s!” –– for U.S. Cable.

Anyway.... I am eager to once again start doing live music shows on these hallowed old stomping grounds of mine. I have already established a  strong relationship with the new owner, Frank, who likewise is looking forward to many Midwest BEAT/Night Rock Radio events in his room.

Since this is a virtually new room for live music after so many years, we are officially breaking it in with our “Cherry Bustin’ Bash” on May 14 featuring three great bands of different musical genres, who all deliver high energy shows  –– Stellar Road, Zodiac and Ripley Street –– modern rock, chick rock and classic rock, respectively.

Watch these pages and listen to Night Rock Radio on Sunday evenings (6-9pm on X-ROCK 103.9) for more Midwest BEAT events announced soon at Backstreet Grill & Sports Bar...

Then on May 20, we will move the fun over to Porter County at Buddy & Pal’s Place (3530 N. Calumet Ave.) in Valparaiso for our annual “Spring Celebration Bash”.   That Friday night bill will feature modern rockers Dawnstone, party rock group Nawty and once again, the classic rock of Ripley Street.   This is our first bash at Buddy & Pals since the early 1990s and we’d love to see you all out for this sure to rock event.

On June 5th, Midwest BEAT will team up with The Post-Tribune, The Times, X-Rock 103.9, Night Rock Radio and The Radisson Hotel for “The Canned Jam, an all ages, five band Celebrity East Ballroom event to benefit the Northwest Indiana Food Bank.

“The Canned Jam” will take place at the Radisson Hotel (Rt. 30 & I-65) in Merrillville, Indiana, this show starts at 2 pm (doors open at 1pm) and will feature a variety of musical styles.

Tons of cool raffles will take place throughout the day for a variety of great prizes, including a guitar, a Radisson Hotel/Star Plaza Theatre package and more.  Already on board for this benefit are the bands –– The Stray Toasters (classic rock), X-Girlfriend (chick rock) and Asteria (modern teen rock).  Others will be announced in next month’s issue.

Though it falls a few days after my actual date of birth, the annual “Tom Lounges’ Birthday Bash” will take place on June 11th at Bookies Sports Bar (1468 U.S. 30) in Dyer.  The club will spring for some food for early bird patrons at this “Chick Rock Birthday Bash” featuring a trio of sassy female-fronted groups –– Wicked City, Zodiac and X-Girlfriend.    This should be a party to remember!

Since it has been a tradition for more than a decade now, I am sure Midwest BEAT [and Night Rock Radio] will be involved as stage hosts for some of the shows during the week-long Hobart Jaycee Fest in Hobart, Indiana.  More on that next month also.

We’ll be there to rock you on July 4th also at the Cedar Lake Festival [right on the lake, mind you], helping to bring you a triple bill of homegrown region favorites, including The Highway Band and The Bedlam Brothers.

Then of course, I will join my friends and fellow staffers of X-ROCK 103.9 in bringing live bands to the Lake County Fair the first two weeks of August.   On August 5, it’s X-Girlfriend and on August 12, it’s AC/DC tribute act, Bonfire.

The warm weather will be gone before we know it, so we are packing in as much live rock ‘n’ roll fun as we can in to the next few months.   Please make a point to come out and join us.
