Fresh Faces: New Artist Profile
BACK TO SAY HELLO…AGAIN!
FINCH
by Corine Jurgersone
It’s been a while, but finally, they’re back. And while the new sound of Finch might not be quite like you remember it, vocalist Nate Barcalow hopes that the record – “Is going to rip your face off.”
Finch’s first full-length album, 2002’s What It Is To Burn went gold and cemented a reputation for Finch in the punk world, perhaps creating the term ‘screamo’.
While the success of What It Is To Burn caused the band to gain popularity and inspire numerous other bands, the guys weren’t about to just settle and not push forward creatively.
After a bit of
internal controversy (the band has parted ways with former drummer
Alex Pappas and has added new drummer Marc Allen to the
lineup) and some time off to regroup, Finch is back again, this time
“Writing an album is a process that sometimes people don’t really understand, and there are kind of unseen factors that the kids and the public don’t always know about,” explained guitarist Randy Strohmeyer.
“We wanted to make a record that we were all really satisfied with and we all really loved, and sometimes things like that take time. We just didn’t want to compromise at all,” continued Strohmeyer.
The new sound of Finch is a little harder and a bit more personal to the band.
“We knew we wanted to make a record that was at least a little bit different than the first record,” Strohmeyer said.
“We wanted to keep our music progressing. We figured we might as well keep going forward with things,” he continued. “Writing this record was a little different because of the label support. Last time we wrote a record, a lot of us were just kids in high school, so the process was a little different this time. We had a lot more freedom to just explore. There are some [common] elements between both albums, we didn’t want to completely stray, but we just wanted to be creatively true to ourselves. Everyone contributed equally to writing the album and creatively, so it was a pretty fair effort all across the board”
Lyrically, Say Hello To Sunshine explores a range of topics, ranging from poor health to lobotomies. No surprise, due to the fact that the band is inspired by things like the Ernest movie franchise and watching funny people at the mall.
And while the themes and sound may be a bit different, overall, fan response to the “new and improved” Finch has been positive.
“The fans have been great, of course there are going to be people who don’t like it, but that’s okay, everyone’s got their own opinion. So far, the feedback has been sweet,” said Strohmeyer.
In the coming months, the band will be on the road promoting the album in the U.S. The band is eager to perform and looks forward to sharing their excitement and new tunes with the fans.
“We love being on the road. It’s always kind of funny coming back from a break, but its so much fun, the rush is just overpowering,” concluded Strohmeyer.
