REGION RUMBLE 2006 PROFILEASTERIAby Corine Jurgerson
Region Rumble veterans Asteria will hit the Star Plaza Stage once again this year with their emo/punk rock style.
If you missed out on their outstanding performance last year and our magazine coverage, here’s the scoop on these five guys from Crown Point:
Asteria are twins Seth and Sam Henderson on guitar and drums respectively; Ryan Gullett on guitar, Brandon McQuen on bass and vocalist Terrence Kline.
The band formed back when the guys were just wee little rock stars, participating in junior high talent shows and playing little league games together after school.
By November 2003, the guys had played in a variety of bands and decided it was time to take their musical abilities to the next level.
The Hendersons teamed up with McQuen and Kline to form Asteria, reeling in Gullett shortly thereafter.
When we last spoke to Asteria, the guys were competing in high school athletics, singing in the choir and preparing for college while trying to balance the band and schoolwork. It’s been a busy year, and a lot has changed.
McQuen is finishing his senior year at Crown Point High School, while the other members have either moved on to college or are preparing to start college this January.
The band has also been signed by Confined Records, the same label that signed the now popular Hawthorne Heights before they took the name Hawthorne Heights and moved on to Victory Records.
In February 2005, Asteria’s single, “You Could Be My Mona Lisa”, was featured on the Drive-Thru Records/Purevolume compilation CD.
In April 2005, Asteria was named as “Favorite New Regional Artist” by Midwest BEAT Magazine readers and “Most Promising New Regional Artist” by the Midwest BEAT Magazine staff.
May brought about the launch of Asteria’s second full-length CD, A Lesson In Charades, and over the summer the band found themselves touring the East Coast, wrapping that tour at Chicago’s very own House of Blues, sharing the stage with Evenflow and Bad Fish.
So far they’ve opened for acts such as The Junior Varsity, Spitalfield and Just Surrender. They’ve also gotten their music played on several radio stations – college and commercial. So what’s next on the agenda?
Currently, the guys are working on their third full-length CD, which will be produced by Asteria guitarist Seth Henderson with Hawthorne Heights’ vocalist, JD Woodruff.
Plans are also being made for another national summer tour.
Asteria say that they are looking forward to participating in the Region Rumble again because of the great time they had last year and because of the opportunity it affords them to showcase their music to a broader home-based region audience.
