DETOURby Corine Jurgerson
Region Rumble veterans Detour will once again roll into the Star Plaza parking lot in their tour bus to hit the stage with their distinctive rock sound.
Last year Detour were the big Region Rumble 2005 prize package winners, selling the most tickets for the event and packing the venue full with their fans.
Their goal is to sell the most tickets again this year and take home the prize package that includes free studio time at Thunderclap Studio, plus gift certificates for gear at Rubino’s Music in Merrillville and Dynamite Music in Griffith.
If you missed last year’s hoopla, here’s a quick history lesson on Detour:
Detour are guitarist/vocalist Rich Perez, lead guitarist Jon Schick, bassist D.J. Cavanaugh and drummer Mike Baxter.
The band formed back when the guys were still in high school, but has managed to grow into something much bigger than the band ever expected. Detour’s influences range from the likes of Boston to The Beatles, but the guys have clearly developed their own original style.
Sure, they may throw in an occasional “cover”, but the majority of Detour’s tunes (and there are over 30 of them) are original pieces written by Schick and arranged as a collaborative effort by the entire band.
Overall, energy and the desire for perfection are what continue to push Detour towards their hopes of getting signed.
At the top of their long list of accomplishments is a first place win in Ed McMahon’s Internet talent competition, Next Big Star. This feat awarded them a $5,000 prize and the opportunity to record a demo at Sony Studios in New York.
As a follow-up to that recorded demo, the guys recorded their first full-length CD, I-94, and played album-supporting shows at venues such as The House of Blues and The Elbo Room.
They’ve opened for acts such as George Clinton, Lennon, Outspoken, Injected and The Buzzhorn, played at Vince Neil’s after-show party following a Motley Crue concert and have even managed to share the stage with country acts Joe Nichols and Trent Willmon during the 2005 NEMO fair.
As a band, Detour has toured the Midwest extensively and have developed a strong fan base in Missouri.
When they’re not doing all of the above, they even find time to perform at benefits for organizations such as The American Cancer Society, The United Way Foundation, Renegade Pigs, Feed the Children and more. So what’s next?
When we last spoke to Detour’s manager, Wayne Baxter, the band was heading off to the studio to record the follow-up to I-94.
According to Mike Baxter, that album is almost finished and should be wrapped by in time to release it at the Region Rumble.
In 2005, Detour has really focused on their new record and revamping their band’s image. By the time the new album is launched, Detour may have an entirely new image, including a new band name. The reason for this?
“We’ve had the name Detour for almost six years,” Baxter explained. “There are a lot of other bands out there right now who use the name Detour and even famous bands who have also used the name.”
Indeed, a great reason for a name change, especially for a band with so much potential to propel them to the national level.
