FAREWELL TO FEBRUARYby Corine Jurgerson
Inspired by bands such as Incubus, Foo Fighters and Chicago’s own Alkaline Trio, the Northwest Indiana quartet –– Farewell To February –– have created quite a name for themselves with modern rock music fans both over and under the age of 21.
Since forming in the fall of 2003, this diligent and hardworking combo have regularly split their gigs between night club shows and all ages concerts to make sure they cover all the bases.
The group performed on Region Rumble 2005 at Star Plaza Theatre last year and has also played their original modern rock songs at noted Chicago rock haunts like The Note, U.S. Beer Company and The Underground Lounge.
The focused young band has gone so far as to take their music on the road in their search of open-minded music fans hungry for fresh tunes, self-financing mini-tours in Midwest states and two road trips out to California.
“It’s great to get up and play your original songs in front of young kids, because they are very much into hearing original music,” noted drummer Nick Bittick. “The local club [audiences] are usually a lot harder, because everyone out here in the region are used to hearing cover bands all the time.”
Even so – Bittick, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Tony Pagorek, bassist Bret Smolinski and lead guitarist Chris Moyer –– have stuck to their creative guns and focused on songwriting and recording, rather than buckling under to pressure and learning trendy covers.
After chasing his musical dream for a while on the West Coast, Bittick returned to his home turf of Northwest Indiana a few years ago and spent some time with the band, None The Less.
Eventually, he found a kindred spirit in former Oracle frontman Pagorek. Together they recruited their two band mates and have never looked back.
In the two years since coming together, Farewell To February have released two original music EPs –– 2004’s 3-song Basements of Broadway and this summer’s 6-song So Much For Being Scared –– from which songs can be sampled online at: www.farewelltofebruary.com
The songs written collectively by the bands, with Pagorek handling all lyrical duties, have been warranted good enough for radio play on Purdue Lafayette College station, as well as Chicago’s late 94.7/The Zone and X-ROCK 103.9’s Sunday evening Night Rock program.
Radio jumped on the track “Easter Never Came”, from the first disc, while the song, “Stuck On Falling Behind”, has gotten the most attention from the latest release.
Because “Easter Never Came” was such a popular number, the group included a live version of it on their new CD, recorded on stage at the Star Plaza Theatre during last January’s Region Rumble.
A live version from that same performance of the newly written and previously unreleased song, “Tragically Sweet”, is on the CD. Both tracks were engineered and recorded by Joe Rega of Joey Rega Tours.
“We are starting recording on our new 6-song EP on December 20th, with a target release date of February 28th,” said Bittick of the tentatively titled, Not A Single Sound CD.
“We don’t let ourselves get discouraged, because we think we have good songs and obviously other people do too,” noted Bittick. “We plan on doing another Midwest tour in April to support the new album.”
“Our goal is to take Farewell To February all the way,” he concluded. “When we’re not sleeping, we are working on this band.”
