TYRANT’S REIGNby Corine Jurgerson
Like several other Region Rumble bands, Tyrant’s Reign has had their share of hardships and lineup changes.
The band originally formed back in December 1984, influenced by the ‘80s speed metal trend that made Megadeth and Metallica household names.
While the band never quite lifted off the ground in the United States, they gained underground popularity in Europe and developed a solid fan base via European fanzines and metal magazines.
At that time, the band recorded one CD – Year of the Tyrants – as well as plenty of demos. Offers for record deals even buzzed about, but a bizarre cloud of bad luck and illnesses engulfed the band, which inevitably led to the demise of Tyrant’s Reign. However, all hope was not lost.
In August, 2003, vocalist Randy Barron realized that Tyrant’s Reign had an even stronger following overseas than he had realized. He decided to put the band back together, and on August 24th, 2003, things were rolling again.
After enduring yet a few more lineup changes, Tyrant’s Reign are close to being back on track. The current line-up is: vocalist Randy Barron, lead guitarist Jeff West, guitarist Mike Giordano, bassist Phil Fouch and temporary drummer, Gabriel Anthony.
The band is currently looking for a permanent drummer. To set up an audition, call (219) 808-9677.
In 2004, Tyrant’s Reign released a self-titled album that consisted of a mix of their old songs and a few new.
Though the band has not been signed, they have sold an impressive $18,000 worth of CD’s over the past year and a half, mostly via the Internet.
The recent lineup change has delayed the band’s plans to head off into the studio to record another album, but they plan on returning to the studio as soon as a replacement is found.
Tyrant’s Reign are the heaviest band playing this year’s Midwest BEATR Magazine Region Rumble lineup.
Vocalist Barron joked that their music is so heavy it’s like “brushing your teeth with a belt-sander.”
When you see them play at the Rumble, expect to hear music that is both politically driven and somewhat moody.
“Our songs are very much storytelling,” Barron said. “Every one of my songs tells a story. You can read them like a book.”
Although the band is currently playing their older songs, in the future Barron expects their music to be closer to “Nevermore meets Fear Factory with a bit of Pantera mixed in” rather than their traditional speed metal sound. In regards to submitting for the Region Rumble, Barron explained, “I’ve always been into local music. I just want to give kids the opportunity to see what we’re all about. Metal isn’t dead, no matter what anyone says.”
