MONTHLY COLUMN by Diane Demeter Greetings fellow Metal Freaks!
Since receiving a new CD player for my ride, I just can’t take enough road trips. I was surprised to get KISS Gold CD/DVD, for Christmas. I can’t begin to tell you how big my grin was listening to “Cold Gin” (live) and “Black Diamond.” I love the older stuff the best. It really brought back memories of experiencing the KISS Alive tour. If you hadn’t noticed I used to be a big KISS freak. Yes, I have the bubblegum cards, the comic book (still in the original package) and various tour books, in pristine condition. Maybe someday I can get a good chunk of change out of them (HINT, HINT). I’m having a hard time, getting adjusted to it, on that format, though. There’s just something special about hearing it on vinyl. It seems a little grittier. It’s been years since I’ve listened to any albums. The last turntable I purchased was from a choice of three models, at the local Best Buy. That was a time when phonographs were on the way out. One of these days I’ll break down and find a new cartridge for the thing. Just in case you hadn’t heard, the Ozzy box set, The Bible of Ozz, has already been released this month. Included is a third disc entitled, “oddities and duets”. Type O Negative (who worship Black Sabbath) sits in with Ozzy on the old Status Quo tune, “Pictures of Matchstick Men”. Speaking of Type O they are no longer on Roadrunner. Their new label is SPV and the guys are working on material for a release, this year. Roadrunner has recently re-issued Fear Factory’s official debut album, Soul Of A New Machine and the remix album Fear Is The Mind Killer. According to Chris Barnes, of Six Feet Under, in Trinidad you can be arrested for using foul language on stage and for wearing camouflage. I can’t imagine a show without a least one “F*ck yeah!” belted out by an enthusiastic fan. A new CD is on the horizon for SFU and Barnes says, “…concept album based around the theory, myth, reality of the Grim Reaper.” Judas Priest fans will rejoice on the 28th, as their newest CD, Angel of Retribution, hits the stores. Relapse already has released Buried Inside’s Chronoclast and High On Fire, Blessed Blackwings, both available on 12” Vinyl as well as the standard CD. I guess there’s another good reason to get my turntable back in action. The Metal Blade Video compilation, Digital Video Devastation DVD is out now and Brainstorm’s Liquid Monster becomes available April 4th. This March you can expect the Soulfly DVD, The Song Remains Insane. You get over 60-minutes of the band live, around the world, all the bands videos (4), exclusive interviews with Max and the rest of the band and six performance clips. Revolver and Kerrang! magazines have both voted, Mastadon’s Leviathan, “Album of the Year 2004”. Maybe they know something we don’t?
SHOWS & MORE SHOWSBeyond the Embrace Tour with Amorphis and Into Eternity, March 11 in Sauget, IL at Pop’s and on March 13 at Joe’s On Weed Street, in Chicago. Slipknot’s Subliminal Verses Tour hits the Rosemont, Illinois’ Allstate Arena on February 13, with Lamb of God, Shadows Fall and Gizmachi. The House of Blues in Chicago hosts the Unearth Tour with Atreyu, Norma Jean and Scars of Tomorrow also on February 13. The Black Dahlia Murder Tour with King Diamond, Nile and Behemoth will kick your ass, just the way you like it on April 27 at the House of Blues, in Chicago and on the April 29 in Sauget, IL at Pop’s.
QUICK CHANGEIn the December/January issue of Midwest BEAT, the band Quick Change was featured in the special pullout section promoting the magazine’s “6th Annual Region Rumble.” Since then, I got one of their CD’s, Live At The Metro – Chicago. It features six songs that really give a good impression of their diversity. The vocals are very robust, with a lot of soul behind them. The band is original and you can tell they really love what they are doing. You can hear their various influences come through the music – from Dream Theatre and Lynyrd Skynyrd, all the way to Slayer. After the usual line-up changes, the present one includes: Russ Barron–vocals, Chris Harbin-bass, Dubs Anderson-guitars and Craig Williamson-drums. They’ve been around, off and on since 1982 and have too much passion for their music to throw in the towel. They have played mostly around the Chicago area and have recently been hitting the Northwest Indiana scene, to stir things up. I for one, wish they would get on the bus and hit us down here in Central Illinois sometime soon. I would suggest to Quick Change, to hook up with the Heavycore organization and network, so as to get their music heard by more fans of true metal. They have three full-length discs, with their debut album, Circus of Death, on Roadrunner Records (when they were doing thrash/speed metal and compared to Overkill), Money, Lust & Greed and 4 Life. Outside Looking In, will be the next one, out sometime, this year. Find out when they will be in your area at, www.quickchange1.com This is a good metal band with a lot of experience and I just had to share with readers how impressed I was with their music.
