LISA McCLOWERY

STREET BEAT: Regional Artist Spotlight…

LISA McCLOWERY

by  Ernie Thomas

Singing since she was a two-year-old according to her mother, Lisa McClowry has the kind of seasoned vocal pipes which truly shame the hordes of spangled pop singers who dominate today’s music charts.

Perhaps one day that injustice will be rectified, for aside from her voice, McClowry has already racked up an impressive performance resume and sports the kind of striking good looks mandatory these days to appease an image conscious marketplace.

Though not a household name like Britney Spears or Pink, it is quite likely that McClowry is a familiar voice in the homes of readers who have young children.

The 29-year-old Southwest suburban gal has lent her robust voice to the soundtrack recordings of three hit children’s films –– “The Rugrats in Paris,” “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle” and 2003’s “The Wild Thornberrys”  ––  all of which feature McClowry singing at least one song.

“I sing the theme song on the Thornberrys with another singer,” she mentions.  “I also did the voice of  the character “Princess” in the Rugrats picture.”

McClowry and her songwriting partner of ten years, Lavant Coppock, co-authored the popular tune “Through The Eyes Of A Child” with Devo band leader, Mark Mothersbaugh, which she then sang in the film, “The Adventures Of Rocky & Bullwinkle.”

Singing for 15 years and having taken professional voice lessons for much of that time, McClowry delivers every tune she sings with an unbridled gusto, sparkling phrasing and considerable soul.  She explained that her powerful delivery comes from applying a special opera technique, regardless of the style of music she is singing –– progressive contemporary, energetic rock, or smooth pop ballads.

McClowry covers all of those styles on her forthcoming sophomore album, which she is presently laying down at Jim Peterik’s Legacy Studios and co-producing with Larry Milas (Ides of March).

Co-writing the songs with McClowry for her as-yet-untitled 13 song collection of original music is her long-time collaborator, Lavant Coppock, award winning Chicago composer, Jim Peterik (Ides, Survivor, .38 Special, etc.), and Los Angeles songwriter/musician, Mark Wengeleski

Her first album, Spyglass Hill, came out in 2001.

McClowry began chasing the dream as a high school sophomore, when she formed her first rock ‘n’ roll cover band –– Mischief –– who played everything from school dances to local club shows.

When she is not in the studio laying down songs for films or for her own projects, McClowry is one half of the veteran acoustic duo, Tom & Lisa, who have been kicking around for 13 years.

The pair mix up covers and originals while playing top shelf venues nearly every weekend and holding down a steady Monday and Thursday gig at Chicago’s world famous Red Head Piano Bar.

Since hooking up with Peterik, whom she met while attending one of his book signings, McClowry has become a part of his all-star World Stage concerts, where she now regularly performs alongside a virtual Who’s Who of classic rock icons.
