CORINE’S CD CAPSULESCAPSULE COMMENTARIES
BY REVIEWS EDITOR, CORINE JURGERSON
FULL SCALEFull ScaleColumbia RecordsWhy you might love it: Fans of nu-metal will love the heavy sounds of these Australian rockers. Supporters of bands like Faith No More, Rage Against the Machine and Helmet will find Full Scale appealing for their hard-hitting metal sounds reminiscent of the metal gods of the late-80’s to the early-90’s. Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Sevendust, Helmet) produced the self-titled debut album.
Why you might hate it: Although the band has a tight sound coupled with some captivating lyrics, musically, its not really anything that we haven’t heard before. Fans of the nu-metal genre will probably find the album a safe buy, but “safety” doesn’t sell records to the majority. After a few plays, you’ll find it may blend like a chameleon into your record collection, right next to that favorite Poison album you had to have.Overall Grade: C+
BLEED THE DREAMBuilt By BloodWarcon EnterprisesWhy you might love it: This is truly melodic rock/screamo-emo at its best. Vocalist Brandon Thomas accurately describes the sound as “50 percent aggressive, 50 percent passive.” Harmony-driven guitars are a perfect complement to Thomas’ intense vocals. The album is essentially a musical rollercoaster, one minute abrasive, the next moment mellow. Their sound is harder than bands like Fall Out Boy and Story of the Year, but not as harsh as the brash tunes of Rise Against. In short, the perfect album for the bi-polar musical enthusiast. Why you might hate it: Screamo isn’t favored by all, and the earsplitting lyrics on this album might be a turnoff to the unseasoned listener. Though the band has toured with several pop-punk bands and will be heading out on this summer’s Warped Tour, their sound is a bit heavier than some of their tour peers.Overall Grade: A
ARIEL APRAICIO & THE HIRED GUNSFrolic & F*ckBully Records
Why you might love it: One cannot deny Aparicio’s talent, an eclectic blend of many musical genres. The album bounces all around, with musical themes reminiscent of the ‘50s, ‘60s, reggae and even some country twang. There is something for everyone on this album, and you never know what’s coming next. If you like a variety of music, you’ll love this album. It truly stands on its own and isn’t like anything else available in record stores today. Why you might hate it: If you’re into mainstream Top 40 music, you might not pick up on what Aparicio is aiming for with the wide variety of tunes on the disc. The album is a bit bizarre for its time and probably not something that you’ll hear on the radio anytime soon. Its originality is what makes it charming, but the majority may not be ready to tap into these innovative sounds quite yet.Overall Grade: B
SUBSEVENFree To ConquerFlicker Records
Why you might love it: Another rock ‘n’ roll band added to the pool is never a bad thing for many music fans. Subseven combines elements of pop-punk to heavier rock, making them a safe bet for a good live show. Their sound is solid, they play well together and the lyrics are decent. If you shop at stores like Abercrombie and Fitch or Hollister and love the music blaring over the sound systems, this is the perfect CD for you.Why you might hate it: Overall, the album is pretty mediocre and leaves a lot to be desired. No original chords or riffs, no original themes. The album provides excellent background music, (or at times, noise…) but just isn’t very enjoyable. Each song bleeds into the next with no one track standing out. Check it out if you’re up for something new, but don’t be surprised if you quickly find it at the bottom of your CD collection.Overall Grade: C-
