WANT TO LEARN THE BIZ FROM THE INSIDE OUT? THE ROCK WORKSHOP COULD BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED!
If you have ever dreamed of cranking out a rock anthem in front of thousands of adoring fans, Wunder Studios has just the thing for you – The Rock Workshop, a week long immersion program where participants can jam side-by-side with real live rockers.
It will be held from June 27 through July 1 at Maine West High School, 1755 S. Wolf Ave., Des Plaines, IL. The program costs $475 and is open to anyone high school age or older.
The guests for this summer's program include Grammy winner
Jim Peterik of Survivor and The Ides of March,
Ralph Covert of The Bad Examples, and Dag Juhlen of
Poi Dog Pondering and The Slugs.
“This is an awesome opportunity to meet these guys in person, but it’s much more than a rock 'n’ roll fantasy camp," says Michael Barrette, head of Wunder Studios. “Our guest artists are coming out to share their experiences and talk about what it takes to succeed in the music business.”
The Rock Workshop is a comprehensive program, with sessions that explore the business side of music (marketing/promotion), the technical side (demo recording, live sound engineering, independent record production, etc), and the performance side (performance technique, song writing, private lessons, and master classes). (more)
“Jim Peterik is an incredible songwriter,” says Barrette. “He’s written half a dozen chart topping hits and won a Grammy for the song “Eye of the Tiger.” You’ll actually be able to sit down with him and talk about song writing. It is an tremendous opportunity."
Other guests include Jim DeRogatis, rock critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, and Michael Harris, former editor of Illinois Entertainer.
“These guys are long-time observers of the rock scene and can be honest about how the business really works,” Barrette explains. Other guests include a record producer, promoter, and a club owner.
When it comes down to basics, the program is still about music and performing. Everyone at the workshop takes part in daily jam sessions and master classes. The workshop concludes with a concert featuring songs written, arranged and performed by participants. Everyone receives plenty of help from the staff.
“Part of the program is that you get a private lesson every day. That’s an amazing opportunity to take your playing to the next level,” says Barrette. Lessons are offered for guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, and percussion. On top of that, everyone gets a daily group voice lesson and a class in microphone technique.
“Everybody can sing,” says Barrette. “Most of us just need a little guidance and a chance to build some confidence. This is the perfect place to do just that. Someone might be reluctant to sing on Monday, but by the end of the week you won’t be able to pry the mic out of their hands.”
