THE NUTS & Bolts

NUTS, BOLTS & METAL SHAVINGS

by  Diane DeMeter

I recently went to a costume shop and noticed a Nuts & Bolts outfit.  How weird is that?  I haven’t dressed up for a holiday for quite a long time.

Many a year the mandatory choice for me  was to go as Alice Cooper.

It was especially entertaining when I used to take my little brother out in our racially diverse neighborhood and no one had the slightest idea who the hell I was. I’m sure they never even heard of Alice Cooper, let alone knew what he looked like.  The glazed-over looks I received, were classic!

NINE INCH NAILS...

I had the good fortune of seeing NIN again, in Champaign/Urbana, last month for the first date of his 2006 U.S. With Teeth Tour.  The first time I saw Trent Reznor was 11 years ago, during the The Downward Spiral Tour.  It’s still one of my Top Ten favorite shows.

Most of those in attendance at The Assembly Hall, would lead you to believe it was a Hot Topic Holiday event or at the least a Marilyn Manson birthday bash.

The industrial elements were toned down and the laser/strobe/light show was excellent!  I’m sure most everyone had teary eyes when he played, “Hurt”.   To be able to perform to adoring fans would be kick-ass enough but to have your fans scream the lyrics along with you has got to be as  satisfying as hell.

It was a high-energy show (exhilarating is more like it) and worth the money. I was amazed at how many songs he played; somewhere around 20 and almost 2 hours of bliss, covering all your emotions!

If you’ve never been to a NIN show, I highly recommend it. And Trent, you still got it and your ass still looks mighty fine! xoxox

FYI:  There’s a band named, the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza.  That’s almost as sweet as the band name, Sweaty Nipples.

And now for those Nickelback tour dates…NOT!

CELTIC FROST IN THE FORECAST…

It’s been 13 years since we’ve been graced with a new recording from CF. At the first of the year, Celtic Frost signed with Century Media.  The first CD (four years in the making) with the label, Monotheist, will hit on May 30th.

The U.S. offices of Century Media are celebrating their 15-year anniversary with plans including catalog re-issues of Nevermore, Strapping Young Lad, The Gathering, Stuck Mojo, Moonspell and Iced Earth.  These will contain bonus tracks, re-worked artwork, and new liner notes with comments from the artists.

Century Overload is a 2-disc set of more current bands on the label.  New videos (over 60) from the up to date CM roster which include God Forbid, Arch Enemy, Napalm Death, Lacuna Coil and many others.

As if that wasn’t cool enough, another 2-disc set, The Visual Experience, is a compilation of CM’s three out of print VHS collections, showcasing the first 10 years of the labels existence. Due to increased demand, the time was right to give the fans what they’ve been asking for.

Century Media has nine offices around the globe and employs more than 150 people worldwide.

New stuff, available now:  BehemothSlaves Shall Serve EP, Children Of BodomThrough The Eyes Of The Dead, KrisiunAssassination CD and Live Armageddon DVD, MastadonThe Workhorse Chronicles DVD and Call of The Mastadon CD, NasumGrind Finale.  This April, Lacuna Coil will unveil their newest recording Karmcode.

Don’t forget to mark the calender BEAT metalists, because God Forbid will be playing at the House Of Blues, Chicago on March 29.

DEMETER’S TEASERS

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Death Metal: A Documentary DVD  ~ (Exalted )

DEATH METAL: A DOCUMENTARY DVD was conceived and filmed by Bill Zebub of Grimoire Of Exalted Deeds Magazine in New Jersey.

I was excited to watch this and was extremely disappointed as it was pathetically painful to watch.  The disc has a home movie quality with the cheapest packaging ever and barely enough music (not even full videos, and you can barely even call them clips) to increase your heart rate.

It’s not a good representation of the many facets of Death Metal and only about 10 minutes was worth a sh**.  Pass on this one and avoid sharing my disappointment.

ANTHRAX

No Hit Wonders (1985-1991)  ~  (Island/UNI)

This 2-disc set/30 songs, celebrates the 20th anniversary of Anthrax. The recordings are available with new re-mastered versions of their classics, defining the bands thrash/speed metal that made them famous.

Tracks included are -- “Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)”, “Indians”, “I’m The Man” (Def Uncensored Radio Version), “Medusa”, “Got The Time,” “Time” “Bring Tha Noize” with Public Enemy and even two versions of “Antisocials”, one being a rare French version from the 1989 Penikufesin EP, released only in Europe and Japan.

So far this is the most comprehensive collection to date and a must have if you don’t have any Anthrax.  Excellent choice of tunes, for the ol’ road trip.

You might also want to invest in the Anthrology:  No Hit Wonders (1985 –1991) The Videos and Alive 2 (2005).
