Country Music Newsby SCOTT STEM
Country Radio Seminar (CRS) just recently ended in Nashville. This is the annual radio convention where radio programmers, DJs and more come to Nashville to network, hear new talent, meet the artists and more. It is a crucial event for new artists hoping to have their singles played on Country Radio.A lot of great talent performed during the week. My two favorites were, without a doubt, Eric Church and The Lost Trailers.Eric Church, a North Carolina native, is a new artist on Capitol Nashville Records. I heard an advance copy of his debut album the week before CRS and loved it. Then, I saw his performance at CRS. This man is amazing, both as a writer and performer. He performs songs about real life that are simple yet full of complexities. People like to compare new artists to more established stars, and while it’s not always accurate or fair to do that, let me try if that will help you to understand what Church’s music is like.Take a bit of Dierks Bentley, mix it with a dash of Brad Paisley, stir in some Tom T. Hall, a pinch of Hank Williams Jr., and add a huge helping of Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, and that should give you an idea of what Church and his music are about. His first single, “How ‘Bout You,” is out now. It’s a good song and should be radio friendly, but it doesn’t reveal the true brilliance of the album.Songs like “Before She Does,” “Two Pink Lines,” the Cash/Haggard-esque “Lightning,” and the title cut, “Sinners Like Me,” are new Country Music classics.I will scream it from the rooftops – when this album comes out later this year, you should go buy 5 copies each. It’s an album you will want to give to your friends. When people tell you that today’s music is all manufactured crap, you can pull out this album and prove them wrong. Eric Church. Remember the name – his music is what Country Music is all about – real life. The Lost Trailers are a Georgia-based band signed to BNA Records. These five Southern boys have a great sound with a live show that’s rocking. Guys will love their music and stage show, while the ladies will also love to look at them. Ladies, they’re hot…all of them. They’re currently in the studio working on their CD, but check out www.TheLostTrailers.com for more info, photos, and more. I look forward to telling you more about The Lost Trailers when the their single to radio.I also caught a showcase by Rhett Akins. You may remember him by his hits from a few years ago like “That Ain’t My Truck.” Maybe you’ve heard his new song “Kiss My Country Ass,” which has been getting radio airplay and media attention recently. Akins is back and his new music is a perfect representation of who he is. I knew I liked his past hits, but after seeing this showcase, I am excited to hear his new music as well. Welcome back Mr. Akins!Speaking of another welcome comeback, Ty England has returned with the song “Redneck Anthem” from his upcoming new album.I mentioned this last month, but I’ll want to mention it again because it’s great to hear England back on the radio. He’s known for hits like the #3 hit, “Should’ve Asked Her Faster,” as well as his years as the acoustic guitar player/harmony vocalist for his college roommate, Garth Brooks.England is a relaxed, natural performer a la Don Williams. Check out his website www.TyEngland.com for updated information and a release date on his new album. It’s great to have him back! |
