STREET BEAT: Regional Artist Spotlight…Florida Bluesman Has Promising Hoosier Future…
KEITH SCOTT
by Bill Paige
This recent Indiana resident has been a mainstay on the Chicago Blues scene for 23 years. Blues artist Keith Scott arrived in Chicago in 1981 coming from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
“I got interested in playing the Blues from being around Steve Arvey who is a Chicago guy who was down in Gainesville at school. I moved to Chicago to get into playing the Blues. Chicago in the early ‘80s was a great scene, Muddy Waters was still alive and Bo Diddley was around a lot more,” said Scott.
“I came to Chicago on June 11th, 1981 and played my first gig on June 12th at a place called Single File on Webster Avenue on the North Side of Chicago. I played with drummer Tony Mangiullo from Rosa’s Lounge,” added Scott.
Keith Scott is a dynamic blues guitarist playing both electric and acoustic equally well. He has played in Europe and all around Chicago including performances at the House of Blues, the Metro, the Hard Rock Café, Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks games.
During his career thus far, Keith has also had the opportunity to back such world renown blues artists as Little Milton, Luther Johnson, and Eddie Taylor.
“One show that stands out for me over the years was playing with Jimmy Dawkins at the 2002 Chicago Blues Fest on the main stage (The Petrillo Band Shell),” said Scott.
Keith moved to Michigan City, Indiana only recently. He likes his newly adoptive lakeside community and has made it the center for all of his performances. He is playing a circuit that takes him through Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
Last year he played over 200 shows, including gigs in Iowa and California. He is currently leading his own three-piece band, consisting of drummer Robert Carter and Mitch Straffer on bass.
“I’ve been concentrating on the college market. There has been a good response from the Midwest campuses. I am actively pursuing this market,” said Scott. “I’d also like to tap into the European festivals. That is a goal of mine.”
Keith Scott writes most of his own songs and has recorded a total of six CD’s: No Mercy, Living in My Own World, Plastic Bag, Heavy Blues, Live, and Acoustic.
He plans on recording a new CD possibly sometime yet this year. It will consist of half acoustic and half electric blues tunes.
