THE LOW DOWN ON LOW TWELVE!

My first contact with Low Twelve was about 5 years ago, when I requested bands send in their CD’s for a local segment, on my Metal radio show.

It was rare to find an undiscovered band that put out such a professional and comprehensive press kit.  These guys were serious as a heart attack; “half-assed” is not in their vocabulary. They were pretty much the most in-your-face metal (not Nu-Metal) band, playing in Bloomington, Illinois.

Not content to sit around and wait for things to happen, they moved expeditiously towards bigger and better things. They have websites which are very visual, easy to maneuver around and chock-full of information.

They’ve played shows in NYC, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa and all over Illinois.  I saw them last at the Central Illinois Metal Fest where they played some new stuff from their forthcoming CD. It was awesome!

I recently interviewed Pete Altieri, who plays bass for Low Twelve.  He’s someone you should know!

Diane Demeter:  Low Twelve is about to unleash some brutality, for the die-hard metal heads and horror fans, in the first of it’s kind multi-media project called, “This Side Towards Enemy,” tell me about it.

Pete Altieri:  “This Side Toward Enemy” is a very exciting project and definitely the most intense I’ve ever been a part of.  Low Twelve has written the 12 songs that make up the soundtrack for the story, which I came up with, about a serial killer named Nolan Weeks.  Each song tells about his cross-country killing spree that ends with him on death row, awaiting execution, (some of the filming will be done at the Joliet Correctional Facility).

A struggling cable news show gets the chance to interview him, and Nolan tells story after story about what his life has been like with 12 serial killers living inside of him.  I am in the process now of writing the screenplay for the story, so we’ll be doing a DVD along with the 12-song CD.

I’ve also written a 12 chapter book to go along with it that will be illustrated by Jeff Gaither (famous for his Misfits artwork). It will be an epic. It will be unleashed in 2004.

Check out www.ThisSideTowardEnemy.com for all the details-listen to sounds and read much more.

DD:  Besides writing horror, you’ve written a weekly web column, The Brutality Report (found on www.lowtwelve.com) and a quarterly newsletter, Low Times, for the last several years, with no end in site...

PA:  I enjoy writing a great deal!  To me it’s like breathing.  Currently I’m working on the screenplay for the new Heavycore DVD, Roasting Posers: Volume I (on Heavycore Records) which we will have out by December.

We will film some of the extra footage next Saturday, 10/18 in Colfax, IL, where we practice.  The bands on this are kick ass. We’ve got Pro-Pain, Lividity, Low Twelve, Blessed with Pain, Alchymist, Skeptik and tons more.  There will be almost 20 videos on the DVD including a live version of the Heavycore anthem, with us and a few more bands doing it at the recent Melissa Berning Benefit, in Urbana.

DD:  Your crowning jewel has to be the conception of Heavycore itself (an organization that supports underground metal).  Tell me just how dedicated and committed you are to the project, that took on a life of it’s own.

PA:  Heavycore was really an idea I came up with that I thought would never get to the point it has.  It’s unreal.  I spend several hours a week on the web site and recruiting new members (free membership).  We’re nearing 1,000 strong and we only started in 1999 with a small handful of Central Illinois bands.

It’s an awesome group of bands –– all heavy as hell, (including all the bands on Metal Blade and Relapse Records). But each is unique and that’s what we like about the organization.  If you’re into death metal, we’ve got a ton.  But if you like hardcore, thrash, black, or grindcore, we’ve got lots of them too!  Check out more online at:  www.heavycore.org

DD:   Word on the street is, the “Heavycore Poser Roast 6” will be in Central Illinois, this year.

PA:   Oh yeah!  November 29th at the Canopy Club (708 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana, IL) with Lividity, Waco Jesus, Low Twelve, Blessed with Pain, Alchymist, and Skeptik.  Should be oh so brutal!  Don’t miss it!

DD:  Low Twelve is going to be playing a special Midwest BEAT show, on November 14th.  Fill the BEAT readers in.

PA:   It will be our first show ever in Indiana (“HARD’N’HEAVY” night at McCool’s, in South Haven) and we’ve been challenged.  BEAT editor Tom Lounges told me that the girls in Indiana don’t usually show their tits at concerts and we are famous for getting some wicked titty shots on the web site.  So the bar is raised and we’ll be sure to smash it!  Also...we’ll be throwing down in usual Low Twelve style.

We’ll be playing lots of new stuff and destroying ears for miles.  Should be a blast.  Warning – I’m bringing a box of tampons to throw at the pussies who don’t headbang.  Check out www.lowtwelve.com for more stuff on Low Twelve and to check out some sounds.

There you have it!  Go to the show and secure your spot by the stage if you like to head bang and don’t forget to have your heating pad at the ready, when you get home!
