GOODING

“Angel / Devil”

Kingdom 2 Music

Why you might love it:  The best way to describe Angel/Devil is “artistic”.  The first time you play the album, you are immediately drawn to play it again.   What is it that is so intriguing?  Maybe it’s the eclectic blend of blues, electronica, rock and even a little hip-hop.  Perhaps it’s the enticing, raspy vocals of front man and band namesake Gooding – his energy and funky edge really carries the album. Likely, it’s the unique overall sound of the album that makes it an excellent addition to an album collection.  Noteworthy tracks include the dance track “Goldenboy”, the softer ballad “Harm’s Way” and the bluesy “Charlatan”.  Expect to hear more from Gooding in the upcoming months, as the band will be touring the plain states and the Midwest through the fall.

Why you might hate it: This is definitely an artsy album – it explores many different musical genres and some music fans prefer when artists stick with one sound and go with it.  There really isn’t much negative to say – check it out for yourself and you’ll see why!

THE DIAL

“Flex Time”

Latest Flame Records

Why you might love it: The Dials are one of those poppy girl-fronted rock bands whose sound is so contagious it seeps right into your brain.  Think Blondie meets the Donnas meets Debbie Gibson.  The lyrics are peppy, a little punky and mostly detail puppy-love relationships.  The overall sound has a bit of an eighties edge with lots of keyboards and squeaky, squealy vocals.  It’s something a little different than what is being played out there today and its great to hear something unique being tossed into the mix.

Why you might hate it: While the album is fun and energetic, it borderlines on being sickeningly sweet. In short, its just campy pop and it could get old really quick for most.  I liked it, but I have to say that I’m not sure if it’s something that I’d really considering keeping around in my collection.  Too much sugar can kill.

THROUGH YOU

“Silhouette”

ParaFora Music

Why you might love it: Through You has perfected the genre of melodic, bipolar rock.  The album opens with a gem of a track, “Blanket of Nerves”, a mellow tune full of harmonies and power chords.  The album progresses with a bit of rapping and screaming, leaving the listener to wonder whether they’re actually listening to Rage Against the Machine, Faith No More or My Chemical Romance.  In short, the album is a bizarre blend of emo, rap and rock, sometimes delightful, sometimes atrocious.

Why you might hate it: The genre shifts are a bit much.  One minute you’re listening to something melodic and relaxing, the next moment you’re listening to heavier screaming, then whiny, emotional lyrics.  It’s almost exhausting.  I felt like taking a prozac after listening to this album, and I’ve never taken an antidepressant in my life.  It’s not that the album is bad – its just lacks focus.  At least check it out for “Blanket of Nerves” – undoubtedly the best track on the CD.
