JAMES DEAN

“The Real James Dean: 1931-1955”

Eagle Rock / 105 Min.

Fans of the late Hoosier film icon will love having this digitally cleaned up collection of archival film clips from his films, television work and commercials.

Really hardcore fans of the eternal rebel are likely to not learn anything new or startling about Dean via this DVD, but casual fans will garner some insight on the actor – from what made him tick, to some of the early work he did on both the East and West Coast .

The DVD gives these fans a perspective of Dean’s persona past the three film roles that immortalized him.

“The Real James Dean” aptly captures the essence of the small town boy from Fairmount, the tremendous sense of loss that drove him, and how he became the world’s most unlikely pop culture icon.

Celebrity commentary from some of those who worked on camera with Dean  –– Eli Wallach, Dennis Hopper, Rod Steiger –– is woven in well with the imagery. Brit rocker Graham Nash is the only odd man out, seeming a out of place and out of his element here.

The most informative when it comes to helping fans learn just who James Dean really was, are Dean’s Indiana cousin Marcus Winslow and Dean’s best high school buddy, Bob Pulley.

The two elderly gents give an insider’s perspective of the private, young Dean they remember growing up with in their small town.  The Dean who took pleasure in riding his motorcycle up and down Main Street, shooting hoops and skating with his pals on the Winslow family farm’s pond.

      This is an excellent collection!
