KATE VOEGELE

Louder Than Words

Communicate Music

Why you might love it:  Really, what’s not to love? Up and coming singer/songwriter Kate Voegele is a hidden talent tucked away in Ohio – and she’s right on the edge of becoming a superstar.

Voegele’s sound is best compared to the acoustic driven tones of Michelle Branch combined with the vocals of Vanessa Carlton.  The upbeat, power  melodies are the perfect blend of pop and rock.  I’m entranced.  Can I have seconds, please?  Check out Voegele’s website for more info at www.katevoegele.com

Why you might hate it: This is, above all, a pop record.  If you’re into heavier, brasher tunes, this isn’t for you.  However, even the hardest of metal heads would recognize Voegele’s talent.  Try something new – you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Overall Grade: B+

JACK’S MANNEQUIN

“Everything In Transit”

Maverick Records

Why you might love it: Prepare to be blown away!  The side project of Something Corporate front man Andrew McMahon generated well-deserved buzz long before its August 23rd release.  Heartfelt piano melodies and emotional lyrics propelled this record to the top of the Myspace (Internet socialization website) music rankings within one day of its release, beating out Chicago punk band and recent musical phenomenon, Fall Out Boy. Take the time to listen to the album’s first single, “The Mixed Tape” – a journey through a past relationship – and I assure you you’ll be hooked. If that doesn’t do it, other album gems, such as “Dark Blue” and “Made for Each Other/You Can Breathe” will surely reel you in.

Why you might hate it: Emo haters, beware.  Lyrics don’t get any more honest than this.  Fans of heavier sounds, steer clear – this is no where near System of a Down or Disturbed.  Even fans of pop/rock might be turned off by some of the slightly campy piano melodies, such as those in “Made for Each Other” – but those same melodies also make the album endearing.  Overall, it’s a great find, and could even be described as ‘art’.  Check it out, again, you might be pleasantly surprised!

PAT McGEE BAND

“Save Me”

Kirtland Records

Why you might love it: The Pat McGee Band’s latest endeavor, Save Me, is one of those rare pop/rock efforts that shines like a star amongst other albums of the same genre.  The adult-contemporary sound is suitable for most everyone and is similar to the style of Edwin McCain, The Goo Goo Dolls and The Dave Matthews Band.  For radio play, think The Mix 101.9 FM and WXRT 93.1 .   The guitar-driven record is mellow without being boring and manages to maintain its momentum from start to finish.  Lyrically, you’ve got your typical songs about relationships and breakups, but McGee’s solid vocals are a nice compensation for the cliché lyrics.  Overall, a safe buy – you might tire of it after extensive play, but it’s likely to remain on your ‘play list’ for some time.

Why you might hate it: Call it a coincidence- most of the albums I received this month were softer pop/rock, which was quite a change from heavier artists that usually send their CD’s my way.  Some might call this ‘wuss rock’ –which isn’t necessarily far off, but that doesn’t make it all bad.  If you’re not into music that sounds as though it might contribute to the WB’s teenage drama soundtracks, this probably isn’t for you.

Overall Grade: B
