ON THE ROAD WITH... FREAK TESLA, TATTOOS & TELLING JOKES
A Wild Weekend In March 2004!It all started with one hell of a Friday fish fry. Granted I’m not religious, but when over seven pounds of fresh white bass is on its way back from the Wolf River up in Wisconsin, I’m off to the bar to help ensure that none of it goes to waste. One by one they came outta the deep fryer and man, it was some of the best fish I’ve had in a long, long time. Tracy finally arrived and pried my ass off the barstool and down to the Vic Theatre we went to see Tesla.
Eight beers later, I was bringing the guys on stage as they launched into the title track from their latest release Into the Now to start the set. Fifteen songs later, they’d ripped through “What You Give,” “Signs,” “Love Song,” “Modern Day Cowboy” and every other hit I could remember, before calling it a night. We said our good-byes over a final round of Michelob Ultra and headed back home to prepare for an early flight the next morning. We were at the bar in O’Hare’s terminal one by 9:30 and riding a fairly decent buzz as we boarded our flight to Newark, New Jersey. Saturday was under way. Upon landing, we hopped into a cab and headed straight to Paul Booth’s Last Rites Tattoo Studio on 4th Street in Manhattan. Six hours later my back was a swollen mass of blood and ink, so we called it a day, ordered some pizzas, and started drinking again while watching some old horror movies in Paul’s dungeon/apartment. We woke up on the floor Sunday morning and proceeded to go bar hopping around Times Square. The highlights of our sightseeing tour was an old man screaming at his dog to stop eating the vomit lying on the sidewalk on 43rd Street and a Japanese tourist stepping in front of a cab as he was looking up at the buildings off of Broadway. We stocked up on beer before heading back to Jersey for the two o’clock flight back home saving an untold amount of money with the 24oz cans from the liquor store that cost just $1.69 as opposed to the five dollar 12oz glasses in the terminal.
Our first stop was the bar in the Radisson Hotel next to the theater where Tracy and I met up with the boss Tom Lounges and his assistant, Lisa Sotiros for a few drinks before the show. We hung out for a bit drinking and catching up before heading over to the show. We found Larry in the otherwise empty “green room” pacing around on the phone. I immediately attacked his cooler of Coors Light and tried for a moment to hear the opening comic onstage but couldn’t. We talked about our upcoming summers and what we had planned until it was showtime. I reminded him as he walked to the stage that the show was sold out and “not to fuck up” and headed for our seats. The show was hilarious and his southern delivery made it even funnier. I recommend it highly to anyone who needs a good laugh. We were back on the road in the nine o’clock hour finally heading towards home after hitting four states that day. A quick nap and a shower would be all I had time for as my Monday had already begun. I had to be at The Zone [94.7fm] by two and SOiL was at the Metro that night meaning there would be little time for sleep. Just another typical weekend in Freak’s World... Get ‘er done!! | ||
