FEATURELeaving Through The Window… WILLIAM TELL by Corine Jurgerson
After several weeks of rumors, message board chatter and endless fan banter, confirmation came in early February that William Tell, rhythm guitarist of Something Corporate, had left the band to pursue his own career. The cynical music fan might say, “What are you thinking?” or “How could you possibly leave a band that is on the verge of breaking out?” And rightfully so. Looking at music history, you can pretty much count on your hands those that have pursued solo endeavors and have achieved success. Jeff Beck, Peter Frampton, Dave Grohl, Michael Jackson, and recently in the pop world, Justin Timberlake. Certainly there are more, but sadly, the memorable ones are few and far between. Time to grow some extra fingers – maybe even an entire arm. William Tell may very well be the next big solo project success. William Tell, 24, started playing guitar at the age of 14. His father was in a gospel band, so he grew up playing music and singing. Knowing that the music industry is where he belonged, he headed off to Chico State University in Northern California to major in music industry. Soon he would meet Brian Ireland, drummer of Something Corporate, and the two collaborated on a few musical projects. Before long William was filling in for Something Corporate’s original guitarist, Ruben Hernandez, who was leaving the band to study abroad. “Originally I was only supposed to fill in for a few months,” explained Tell. A few months turned into a permanent gig, and he soon found himself touring with the band. Although he enjoyed playing music and exploring the world with his friends, he was unable to suppress his wish to pursue his own musical dreams and song-writing aspirations. His feelings were best summarized on his personal website, www.williamjtell.com, as he confirmed the rumors that he had left the band: “Andrew and Josh are amazing and prolific songwriters, and their writing arrangement was already in place when I joined the band, so I put my own songwriting efforts on hiatus for awhile. I’ve been singing and writing songs since I was a little kid, and I knew that at some point I’d have to go back to that. It’s what makes me feel complete.” It took 6-8 months of seriously considering leaving the band before Tell reached the decision that he would need to leave and approached his bandmates with the news in January. “They weren’t super shocked. I think they knew I’d want to do this. I think that if I didn’t do this, I would always wonder why I didn’t give myself a chance to do my own music.” The split from the band was completely amicable, and both sides have confirmed that it was not at all personal. So what’s life been like post-Corporate? “I’m ready for something different.” Tell said. Since leaving the band, William has been back in the studio, writing, playing guitar, and singing. “I’m trying to find myself again.” He’s met with P.J. Smith, an engineer for some of Something Corporate’s past work, and is working on recording a new album. As for his solo sound? Tell describes it as “straight up rock.” He hopes to be playing shows within the next month or so, starting at the local level in California. Tell expressed appreciation to all of his fans from his run with Something Corporate. “I’ve been amazed and overwhelmed by the support. I’ve gotten some amazing emails. Thank you for sticking around and waiting to see what is coming up.” We’re waiting, Will! Don’t hold out on us for too long! |
