THE NUTS : Heavy To The Coar |

MONTHLY COLUMN by Diane Demeter The brutal world of
metal is heating up as warm weather means metal festivals, all around.
The one event that you should be posting on your calendar now is The
Central Illinois Metal Fest, August 16.
The Canopy Club in Urbana will be hosting the show, to those 18
and over, drinking 21, with an ID. The ticket prices will be determined
in April with advance tickets available through Ticket Master.
FYI: If
you use Ticketmaster and there’s a popular show you’re trying to see
and you hate hearing a busy signal for hours, call a Ticketmaster in
another state, far, far away from the venue.
You will get right through, with no annoying waiting. I am just losing it in
anticipation of attending another fine metal fest straight out of
Champaign/Urbana. The line
up so far is just insane; you decide:
Lividity, Fleshgrind,
Gorgasm, Low Twelve, Waco Jesus, Putrid Pile, Evil Incarnate and Central Point Specimen, all hailing from Illinois.
Out of state bands include: Lust
of Decay - NC, Sadomasochism
– MI, Mutilated – MI, Brodequin – TN, Leukorrhea
– MA, Burial - MA and Screaming
Afterbirth – WI. The
headliner has just been announced and it’s...(drum roll please)... Incantation. Vendor tables are
available for $25, but they are going fast.
Vendors stepping up to task include: Comotose Music – NC, Coven
of Death Distribution – IL, United
Gutteral Records – IL, Forever
Underground Records – IN, Dismal
Records – OH, Heavycore
Records - IL and Unmatched
Brutality Records –TN. Doors open at Noon and
bands start the 12 hour shredfest at
1 p.m. Directions and hotel
information will be available soon.
Check out further details at: www.xwarp.net I know it’s about a 2-21/2 hour drive from Chicago (it would be easier would be to take the train), but it will be worth it you are a true metal maven. If the bands can make the road trip, so can you. Do you really want to be kicking yourself later for not showing up? Besides if you don’t support the shows, there won’t be any to go to!!!! I attended two
Death Metal Fests in Champaign, several years ago and was not
disappointed. Two of the
bands that attended were Lividity
and Fleshgrind. They were
as serious as a heart attack and had the moshers in frenzy!
I’ll keep you updated! Hope
to see you there! Yakuza has been getting positive feedback from
their hometown Chicago critics upon releasing their Century-Media debut
of Way
Of the Dead. They
have played the March Metal
Meltdown and SXSW.
They will tour for the most part of 2003, before working on new
material for the next CD. More
info: www.yakuzadojo.com Swedish quintet Andromeda
released their second full-length CD, II=I, on March 11. This
album features new vocalist David
Fremberg, whose range allows the band to explore new music, with no
limit in sight. If you dig
pure progressive rock, this CD is for your collection.
www.andromedaonline.com Canadian
foursome –– Cryptopsy
–– is already working on their next release, due out in late 2003.
In the meantime, fans can pick up their concert CD -- None
So Live -- recorded at the Medley in Montreal, last summer.
Twelve tracks of new and old material are bound to be a hit with
Cryptopsy fans will be available April 8th.
In other related news, Martin
Lecroix has joined the band and taken over as vocalist.
www.cryptopsy.net The Mercury Lift, is the third effort from Birmingham, Alabama’s HASTE,
and is tentatively scheduled for a late May release.
The disc will include two guest appearances by
Randall Blythe (of Lamb of God) and Jeff
Jenkins (of Codeseven). www.hastemusic.com Shadows Fall recently shot a video
for “Destroyer of Senses” in
their hometown of Springfield, MA.
Much Music USA’s Uranium and MTV2’s Extreme Rock will
premiere the video in early April.
Shadows Fall’s third and latest CD -- Art of Balance -- is available as an LP through Lifeforce
Records, in the U.S. and Europe. On
sale now. The band is putting together big summer
touring plans, so be on the lookout. www.shadowsfall.com Reported here last
month, I told you about The
United Tour playing someplace in Chicago, April 20.
It turns out it’s at the Metro.
To refresh your memory, the United Tour includes ––
Bile, Pigface, Thrill Kill Kult and Zeromancer
–– and it is an all ages’ show.
If you’re an eBay junkie this will interest you. The following items are available on the site to bid on:
Vader --
Litany and Revelations CD w/signed cover, King’s X CD Manic Moonlight
w/ signed cover and a Halford
Live Insurrection signed CD. Bands
and labels will donate many more rare items, in the following months, so
keep your eyes peeled. The
reason for all the cool stuff to bid on is to help Ben
Falgoust, singer for Soilent
Green/Goatwhore, with his hospital bills.
He was injured in an accident while on tour with Gwar,
in April of 2002. Amon Amarth, Deicide, Behemoth and Vehemence will be
rearing their heads in Chicago, March 29 in Aurora, IL at the Rockhouse
USA. Underground Death
Metal in your face and then some. The Heavils will be in Chicago on
April 17 at the House of Blues, supporting Saliva, Hed(PE), Breaking Benjamin, Stereomud and Systematic. There is so much
information out there, concerning metal, it’s numbing.
I try to cover a variety, of bands you are familiar with and to
turn you on to new bands that really deserve to be heard.
I could have included
about a twenty more items, but space does not permit. So, this will have to tide you over.
‘Til next time… “ONE
NATION UNDERGROUND!”
