NICOLE
KIDMAN... Two-Time Golden Globe
winner and Oscar-nominated actress Nicole
Kidman made a special guest appearance at the Gene Siskel Film
Center of the School of the Art Institute’s benefit “Sophisticated
Ladies,” the first anniversary celebration of the venue’s new
state-of-the-art facilities at 164 N.State Street.
Pulitzer prize winning
Chicago Sun-Times film critic
and Film Center campaign Honorary Chair, Roger
Ebert, hosted a discussion with Kidman at the event, who joined the
Film Center’s first anniversary benefit which tributes the careers of Audrey
Hepburn and Grace Kelly.
Kidman’s entrance to the event drew applause from fans that had waited outside to catch a glimpse of the glamorous film star. Nicole entered sporting a new blonde straight long shag with a side part and long bangs that covered her left eye. The new look was
a sharp contrast to the look she had in 1994 when she was in Chicago
with then-husband Tom Cruise
when he accepted an award at the Chicago
International Film Festival. TED
NUGENT... Gonzo guitar god -- Ted
Nugent -- made an appearance at Border’s Books and Music in
Chicago to sign copies of his new book,
“Kill It & Grill It,” which he wrote along with his wife
Shemane Nugent. Nugent has sold more
than thirty million records and racked up such hits as “Cat
Scratch Fever,” “Wango Tango” and “Stranglehold”
over his 30 year career. A
noted outdoorsman and supporter of law enforcement, Nugent is the author
of “God,
Guns, and Rock ‘n’ Roll,”
a New York Times best-seller. Nugent is also
Editor/Publisher of Ted Nugent Adventure Outdoors magazine, has a weekly column in
the Detroit News, and is a regular guest on top-rated programs such as “Larry
King Live,” “Tom Snyder,” the former “Politically
Incorrect,” and “Rush
Limbaugh.” When not
on safari or touring the world in sold-out rock concerts, he lives in
the wilds of Michigan with his wife
and children. Nugent was pretty laid
back as he signed his book and memorabilia but his eyes light up-it as a
fan brought in a large industrial strength looking bow and arrow to
sign. “ROAD
TO PERDITION” LEADS TO CHICAGO... Oscar-winning actor Tom
Hanks and Oscar-winning director Sam
Mendes were among those in attendance at a special Chicago screening
of DreamWorks Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox’s new film drama “Road
to Perdition.” DreamWorks
Pictures invited local celebrities and VIPs to the screening in Chicago,
the city that played host to the location shooting of the film.
On hand at the Chicago premiere were -- director Sam Mendes, actors Liam
Aiken, Tyler Hoechlin, Daniel Craig, and Bonnie Hunt (who arrived with her sister Mary), producers Richard D.
and Dean Zanuck, writer David
Self (who wrote the screenplay), Chicago jazz vocalist Kurt
Elling and of course, Tom
Hanks himself, who arrived with wife Rita
Wilson and daughter Elizabeth. The movie also stars Paul
Newman who did not make it to the Chicago premiere but when in
Chicago last year, presented Tom Hanks with an award from the Chicago
Film Critics Association. FRAN
DRESCHER... America’s most
famous “Nanny” –– Fran Drescher ––
appeared at Border’s Books & Music on Michigan Avenue to sign
copies of her new book, “Cancer Schmancer.” Part inspirational
cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-laugh-riot, “Cancer Schmancer,”
picks up where Fran’s last book,
“Enter Whining,” left off. After the publication
of that book, Fran’s life launched into a downward spiral. She
separated from a long and complicated relationship, her TV series
started to slip in the ratings, and her beloved dog Chester Drescher’s
health was in major decline. Then came the
mysterious symptoms no doctor could adequately explain.
With her trademark humor, Fran tells of her indefatigable search
for answers and the cancer diagnosis that she ultimately beat. But not
before a gold mine of humorous insights were revealed to her about what
really matters most in life. Her fans were
delighted. She listened
intently to their own cancer survival stories as they came up to the
table for an autograph. Fran gave many of her fans a thank-you with a
hug as she leaned over the table for at least 400 anxious fans.
