Aloha faithful Midwest BEAT readers.  It is now August, and summer is drawing quickly to a close. School supplies are on sale, Ozzfest is a beer-soaked memory, and I think Marshall Fields has their Christmas decorations up already.

All of that aside, it’s that time of the month where you grab a new copy of this beloved magazine and flip directly to what you read it for…

AUGUST 5

After a scratched release date, the new LP from Blues Traveler titled Truth Be Told is ready to ship…

Get the Picture? ... well, the boys in Smashmouth sure hope so!  If rockabilly is to your liking, check out Full Gospel Rockabilly from The Found Cats

A new series of albums on The Right Stuff label covers all aspects of the blues.  Blues Kingpins releases will arrive from Fats Domino, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, B.B. King and Ike Turner  You can bet the bank that BEAT blues columnist Eric Steiner will be ALL over these releases!

After two of this band’s tracks recently appeared on the new David Lee Roth album, the time is right to release Hellbound Train Live: 1969- 1972, a collection of works from legendary British blues rockers, Savoy Brown.  Beat boss Tom Lounges will surely be beating on the record store doors at midnight for that one!!!

And to round out the first Tuesday of the 8th month, an EP from The Derek Trucks Band titled Soul Serenade, will find its way to stores for your listening pleasure.

AUGUST 12

Produced by husband Neil Giraldo –– Go! –– is the new release from sexy rock siren Pat Benatar…

Kenny Rogers will go Back to the Well for more hits… Wynonna Judd will deliver What the World Needs Now is Love…

I have two favorite picks this month.   Here is the first!  A remarkable 3-CD set from Bela Fleck & The Flecktones titled, Little Worlds.   The crazy bluegrass styling of this award winning veteran group of pickers will entice any serious music fan!

There will be a 2-CD commerative set spanning the 30 year career of southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd arriving just in time for the band’s X-ROCK sponsored 30th Anniversary Tour stop on August 29 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, hosted by our very own Tom Lounges...

And there will be a boxed set from The Doors  which will cover all of their studio recordings.

AUGUST 19

Billy Bob Thornton will release his Edge of the World album in mid-August.   I think he’s a good actor, but I hate when actors try to be rock stars too (like ummm... Phillip Michael Thomas, Keanu Reeves, Don Johnson, Jim Hillegonds and Kevin Bacon... enough already!

Back in action after their nearly tragic highway accident last year, Alien Ant Farm, has a new CD ready to take along on your end of summer picnic in the park. TruAnt was produced by brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots

The Dandy Warhols would like to give you a warm Welcome to the Monkey House… the Chris Duarte Group goes on a Romp… I don’t know about you, but I think that It’s About Time for a new album from Kenny LogginsAmy Grant will enlighten us on Simple ThingsCoal Chamber will Give The Devil His Due…

And there will be new live recordings issued this day from Billy Squier and The Ramones, plus the re-release of the legendary 1986 Wembley Stadium concert by Queen.

AUGUST 26

New DVD’s arrive today from Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash and Cher   Love & Life is the new Puff Daddy-produced effort for Mary J. Blige…

Punk troubadours Rancid will prove to be Indestructible… Disney teen queen Hilary Duff will undergo a Metamorphosis…

And finally, we come to my other pick of the month… Word of Mouth Revisited is a tribute to the Word Of Mouth Band  which was once fronted by legendary bassist, Jaco Pastorius.   The album features guest bassists Victor Wooten, Jimmy Halsip, Victor Bailey, Marcus Miller, and the band even plays around an original Jaco bass line on “Wiggle Waggle.”   Sad to say, Jim Hillegonds does not contribute to this album due to contractual issues with the Ass-Clown Orchestra…

That does it for me folks. Send fan mail, comments and criticisms to: davegrove@midwestbeat.com

Thanks for reading… See you all next month!
