MONTHLY COLUMN by Diane Demeter
THE LOW DOWN ON LOW TWELVE! Hopefully 2004 has led you on the road to new challenges, adventures and friendships. December was a particularly crappy month for me, filled with unforeseen misery and headaches. Needless to say, the New Year was looking pretty damn good, but as usual there are no guarantees. This being the season for change, I’m adding some new things to the column. BAND NAMES YOU GOTTA LOVE… Examples: Leather Hymen, Lollipop Lust Kill, Muddy Loin Cloth and Urinal Mints. Special Inclusion for an CD title has to be Cattle Decapitation’s newest recording, Humanure. “LYRICAL LASHINGS”…
This month’s subject: WINTER
Type O Negative: “Green Man,” (October Rust / 1996) “Winters breath of filthy snow, befrosted paths to the unknown”. Led Zeppelin: “No Quarter” (Houses of the Holy/ 1973) “Close the doors, put out the light you know they won’t be home tonight the snow falls hard and don’t you know the winds of Thor are blowing cold.” FRESH BLOOD… I got two really cool promo EP’s in the mail, that I must share with you. The first is Chicagoland drummer Gabriel Anthony’s solo project, G.A.G. ORDER 13. Anthony’s press kit included a three page bio that’s just damn impressive. He has definitely been around the block, several times. He’s played in Southeast Asia, Europe, Florida, Vegas and the list goes on. Maybe you’ve seen him play in the nationally touring Van Halen tribute band Fair Warning? Or heard him when he was with Century-Media recording act, Radakka. Why he is not all over radio, is a mystery to me. This EP is chock full of well structured and strongly delivered hard rock with a metal edge. It will get your ass up and moving. After hearing this EP, I have to see Anthony live! For more information go to GAGORDER13@aol.com tell him Demeter from Midwest BEAT sent you. Next up is the debut offering from Northwest Indiana’s reigning kings of hardcore –– Terminal Fix –– this EP is called, Step One. Though only together since late 2002, it sounds like a lot longer. These guys also need to be on the radio, in regular rotation with their awesome blend of Hardcore/Heavy Metal. If you didn’t check them out at Midwest BEAT’s Region Rumble last year, you really screwed up… Harder than a 2x4 upside your pretty little head! www.terminalfixmusic.com POSER’S POSTPONED… On November 29th I attended what was supposed to be “Heavycore’s Poser Roast 6,” in Urbana at The Canopy Club. A last minute decision by the club owner, added ILL NINO to the line up. The show went on as planned, but without the Roast festivities, which will be rescheduled soon. Killer show, as it always is…Go-Go Dancers (death metal style), a blow up doll head banging in the front row and several copies of assorted porn movies, thrown out at the moshers. HEAVYCORE UPDATE… Heavycore gets a dot net, after it finally became available, at the first of the year. Heavycore also updated it’s website with a new page, GIG CENTRAL, streaming audio and video and other changes too numerous to mention. Bands: If you are Brutal enough and haven’t signed up yet or have forgotten to reapply, this is your chance to be heard, get lots of exposure, make things happen and have your metal brothers on your side! This site is so easy to check out, you don’t have an excuse, so go there –– www.heavycore.net HEADBANGIN’ NEWS ... Now for the latest head banging news…Cannibal Corpse’s first U.S. Tour in support of the new, Wretched Spawn CD, is upon us. Their short jaunt through the states will be February 14 – March 13 with Hypocricy and Vile. Armored Saint will have a late spring release for the new DVD titled, Armored Saint Magazine. Twelve bootleg videos are the one-hour feature from the Symbol of Salvation tours 1991 – Nod to the Old School Tours 2002. Interestingly enough, the DVD will be done in a fictional eMagazine style. The WWE is jumping on the bandwagon with a new DVD, Originals, with of course, original material. It would be worth it, if only to see Stone Cold Steve Austin belt out, “Where’s the Beer?” How about Ray Mysterio doing “Crossing Borders,” Chris Jericho’s “Don’t You Wish You Were Me?” And Stacy Keibler, “Why Can’t We Just Dance?” It’s out now and a limited edition is also available. Unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ve heard about the Slayer Box Set – Soundtrack For The Apocalypse. This fine example of true metal includes tracks from every Slayer album since 1986, Japan Only cuts and more than a dozen rarities. Live performances spanning almost 20 years, all digitally re-mastered. The deluxe edition has a full-length concert CD from the 2002 “God Hates Us All Tour” in Anaheim, CA, packaged in a “blood pack” sleeve (with fake blood and floating skulls). Too freakin’ cool!!! Also comes with a wall banner and replica backstage laminate. Both editions have extensive booklets highlighting a history based on interviews with each band member and Rick Rubin. It’s in stores now on Island Records. Here’s a heads up to mark your calendars! Midwest BEAT is hosting MAS KAOS and KILLJOY live at The Sandbox Lounge on April 10. This is a hard rockin’ show NOT to miss! A third band is to be added.
