MONTHLY COLUMN

by Rachel Komar

In honor of the “month of love,” I decided to sort through my current pile of demos and choose the ones that I loved the most.

Each of these featured demos are definitely worthy of falling in love with. Not only did they capture my attention, but they captured my heart!

I would first like to start off with an amazing four-piece rock band, Triptych. With their great breakdowns and cool effects, this band is anything but simple. In their release, Next Thing You Know, the creative drumming really stood out to me, as well as the angelic vocals.  The entire CD is very clean-cut, with many heavy riffs throughout. This is truly a quality recording of pure rock.

Another great rock CD is Liftpoint’s self-titled demo. The contradiction of the light vocals and the heavy music make this cd extremely enjoyable. The energy that amplifies from this demo is amazing, due to the fact that the sound is coming from merely a three-piece band. The occasional screams give each song an extra kick. Every song flows well, and each have very catchy hooks.

Switching gears to a more mellow CD, Josh Holmes, formally of the Josh Holmes Band released a solo album, A Table 4 One, featuring some ex-band members. The guitar parts alone prove Holmes has some major talent! The lyrics in this CD are not only great for this season of love, but they show a great sense of maturity and excellent ability to write songs about relationships with meaningful conclusions. This is by far the best local solo album that I have heard to date.

The next band up is Empyrean, a feel-good rock/pop band whose three-song demo, On the Bus, is full of power and energy. This is what I would call a motivation CD because of the great dynamics; it is great to listen to when trying to get something accomplished. The style of the vocals and guitar riffs push the listener to really get into the music. This is definitely a well-recorded demo, and I can’t wait to hear their next full album!

I’d like to end my reviews with punk band, First Class.  Their CD, Somewhere in the Grey, contains fast beats and endearing lyrics. The well-written choruses, with the occasional guitar solo, create a solid foundation for the excellent harmonies and appealing vocals. The rhythm section really stands out, almost creating its own tune, as well as backing up the guitar and vocals. When listening to this CD, I can almost feel the energy flowing into my veins!

Well, that concludes this month’s Midwest Rumblings. I want to personally wish you all the best of luck in love this month, and hey, if you are looking for some new places to take your loved one, check out this month’s concert guide for upcoming concerts in your area! Also, please keep sending those demos my way!
