STREET BEAT REGIONAL ARTIST PROFILE
IV FOURby Ernie Thomas
Northwest Indiana’s IV Four write and perform modern hard rock, but not like the legions of cookie cutter post-Korn/Disturbed bands that have flooded the heavy music scene with so much sound-alike music that the genre is all but dead.
“That’s our curse,” mused bassist Kevin Brown. “We’re too heavy to play shows with all the fashionable new pop-alternative bands, and not heavy enough to play on most heavy shows.”
Falling somewhere in the middle is the rhythmic hard rock sound heard on the band’s impressive three song demo CD, given out free to fans at shows and via their web site.
Fortunately, the band was able to tap into “The Local Zone” hometown music program that aired on 94.7FM before the station switched to an oldies format.
“They played our song, ‘Bound’, several times. That helped get us some attention,” said Brown. “Our new songs are better written and produced.”
IV Four has been together since 2002, when Brown and vocalist Bobby Owensby hooked up. Heath Reid then joined then as lead vocalist, followed by a series of drummers until Dan Wurm took the throne.
“It was like ‘Spinal Tap’ with us when it came to drummers,” laughed Brown. “Dan has been with us over a year and fits in perfectly musically and personally. He’s a good drummer and being the band’s bass player, we work really well together.”
The duo’s strong rhythmic bond is felt all over their demo, from the hardcore aggression of “Fault”, to alt-rocker “Parasite”, and the centerpiece song, “Now We’re Numb”, which has an Alice In Chains/Soundgarden feel.
Currently, IV Four play the tri-state area. “We do benefits, all ages shows and some clubs,” noted Brown. “But we don’t play any cover songs and that sometimes makes it hard to get gigs.”
They still manage to find gigs, including a recent one at The Excaliber night club in downtown Chicago..
The group’s new songs will soon be laid down at Creature Feature Recording Studios and this time they hope to be able to release a full length album.
“We’ve given out about 1,200 copies of our latest 3-song CD, so we’re hoping people are started to become aware of who we are,” concluded Brown.
