THINGS GET “ICY” AT RIVER EAST

The premiere of the Illinois-made motion picture, “The Ice Harvest”, with director Harold Ramis, producers Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa and stars John Cusack and Connie Nielsen (with guy pal Metallica’s Lars Ulrich not far behind), was recently held at the AMC River East 21 multiplex.

A bash followed at the Lucky Strike Lanes in the same building. A large birthday cake was waiting in the corner of the VIP room to celebrate Harold Ramis birthday.

Sugarbabies of the Lavender Cabaret performed dance routines in the bowling lanes and Red Eye columnist Liz Crokin was thrilled to have her picture taken with Chicago-born film star, John Cusack.

MARSHALL FIELDS’ CELEBRITY STOPS...

Marshall Fields in downtown Chicago is often the site where celebs stop to meet ‘n’ greet fans while in out toddlin’ town.  That was the case again in recent weeks!

Kenneth Cole popped in to greet fans and sign autographs to promote AIDS awareness evidently, as a percentage of sales on Kenneth Cole items for the day went to: www.weallhaveaids.org

Rachel Ray of the Food Network signed copies of her new book, “Rachel Ray 365:No Repeats”

BORDERS BOOKS...Comedians to candidates

Comedian and talk radio commentator Al Franken held a discussion forum with fans and signed copies of his latest book – “The Truth, With Jokes” – at Border’s Books & Music on Michigan Avenue last month.

The Border’s on State Street hosted an appearance by war hero, U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate, John McCain.  The popular Senator happily shook hands, chatted and signed copies of his new book, “Character Destiny”.

Someone who has covered plenty of candidates is newsman – Mike Wallace – who spent a few hours at Border’s as well, putting his autograph on copies of “Between You And Me”, a personal tome about his years in the press corps and as host of the award-winning television news magazine, “60 Minutes”.

THE HURDY GURDY MAN HITS TOWN

Iconic 1960s singer/songwriter, Donovan Leitch, was in town last month for a concert appearance as part of his “40th Anniversary Tour.”

While in Chicago, he took an afternoon visit to the Border’s Books & Music on State Street, where he strummed a few songs and signed copies of his life story “ The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man.”

Often called Britain’s Bob Dylan, Donovan was an unconventional artist, a romantic outsider who ushered in a new sound to the folk genre. His international hits – “Mellow Yellow” and “Jennifer Juniper” – brought folk music to mainstream audiences. Along with his book, Donovan is out promoting the new “40th Anniversary” Sony/BMG box set that chronicles his career in music.

The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man” is an openly honest memoir about the life and times of Donovan. He recalls everything, from his days as an teen, to camping on beaches and hitchhiking, to his life as a chart-topping folk star hob-knobbing with such legends as Joan Baez, Brian Jones, and even Bob Dylan, as well as his legendary trip with the Beatles to the Maharishi.

With the same poetic charm that made his songs classics,  The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man” is a celebration of the 60s, filled with all the joy, love, and reverie of the times.

PARTY AT LePASSAGE...

Rock stars Alanis Morisette and Tommy Lee were both seen hanging last month at the red hot Chicago night club, LePassage

Motley Crue’s Lee, who often trades his drums for “wheels of steel” when visiting clubs was spinning records in LePassage DJ booth for the club’s “Remix Fridays”.  Lee later stepped down and partied in the VIP area with singer Alanis Morisette and entrepreneur and club owner Billy Dec, who interviewed the two rockers for the first segment of his new Metromix TV show,  which will soon be airing on CLTV.

DENNIS RODMAN “Should Be Dead By Now”

Basketball superstar Dennis Rodman arrived at Border’s Books & Music with in a white carriage accompanied by a fire breathing act that tailed along side his stately horse-drawn ride.

Whether it was helping Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls win three-straight NBA titles in the 1990’s or showing up to a book signing in a dress and full makeup, Dennis Rodman has always distinguished himself as one of the great and most polarizing personalities in the sports world.

Wearing a gothic look long black dress, Rodman has changed his look and method of arrival for all stops on this book tour. In New York he arrived in a coffin with a suit and his arrivals at Border’s locations in other cities have been equally creative.

Here in Chicago, Rodman was an hour late as fans and media waited in the frigid temps for his arrival to sign his new book, “I Should Be Dead By Now”.

The controversial and flamboyant former basketball star, who recently had a tryout with the Denver Nuggets and has played with the Long Beach Jam of the ABA in hopes of getting another shot at the National Basketball Association, is basking in the national spotlight once again thanks to “I Should Be Dead By Now.”

The new book from the two-time best-selling author details Rodman’s struggles in life since he stopped playing in the NBA, including the breakup of his marriage to movie and TV star Carmen Electra and his problems with alcohol.

“I Should Be Dead By Now” is a look at the life of one of America’s most recognizable sports stars since the lights of professional basketball stopped shining as brightly, and how the author hopes to make a successful return to the game that made him famous.
