THE NUTS & BOLTS OF HEAVY METAL |

MONTHLY COLUMN by Diane Demeter
I had the enchanting
pleasure of attending a performance by GWAR at The Canopy Club in
Urbana, Illinois, on November 3rd.
I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed, especially after I saw the
walls and bar covered by sheets of plastic.
The place was packed and smokey.
The show was just too damn entertaining!
Everyone was engrossed by all the action on stage.
My camera was
splattered and so was I, when Tyson got his arms chopped off by a mighty
sword. You thought Ozzy’s
water cannon was fun? GWAR
takes the prize for all the delicious ways the audience was sprayed with
various colored liquids projected over 30 feet by a collection of
amputated/body parts and something to the effect of a paddle
wheel. Slymenstra Hymen gives
Gene Simmons a run for his money, when she spits fire. She also slayed
her fair share of creatures and did a spectacular fire dance. Oh and by
the way the music was killer. I
loved standing next to the speaker and having my hair completely
airborne. Can you say, “Hell Yeah!”
Much thanks to the great job by the sound guy!
GWAR is on The Bitch
Is Back tour supporting their new CD, “Violence Has Arrived.”
Metal Blade Records is
having their 20th Anniversary Party in Hollywood, December 4th, at The
Palace. Bands to play are – Cannibal Corpse, Armored Saint, Lizzy
Borden, Engine, Cattle Decapitation and Vehemence. It’d be sweet to
see them take that anniversary show on the road.
God Dethroned is in
Sweden recording Into The Lungs Of Hell.
40 GRIT has completed their second recording, Nothing To
Remember, due out in January. MP3 single, “Only Human,” is available
at http://www.metalblade.com or http://www.40grit.com
The video will be shot in the San Francisco Bay Area, end of
November. Video will be formatted for inclusion in an enhanced CD
package, all for $9.98.
Hibnus Mortis, South
Florida’s death metal scene staple, will be releasing their debut
album, The Existing Realms Of Perpetual Sorrow.
Look for it in Spring 2003, on Horns Up Records.
In the meantime, listen to the MP3 at http://hornsup.whitetrashdevil.com/music/sorrow.mp3
Brick Bath announced
Cody Hubbard as their new vocalist/front man, replacing former screamer,
Joseph McCaw. McCaw departed after the 2002 U.S. Summer Tour, citing
irreconcilable differences as well as health issues.
Brick Bath is in pre-production for their second CD, due in March
2003, on the Pavement/Crash Music. Their
debut release I Won’t Live The Lie, was nominated for “Best Hard
Rock/Metal Album Of The Year,” at the 2002 San Diego Music Awards.
Here’s a really cool
contest on the Roadrunner Records website, stating – “Machine Head
wants you to name their upcoming live album.
If Machine Head picks your entry, you will see your title on the
cover, get credit on the album package, and receive a free autographed
copy of the live CD.” I’m
game, are you?
The smell of burning
leaves wafting on the breeze, always reminds me of Type O Negative and
wouldn’t you know it, they are back at Systems Two Studios, in
Brooklyn working on the long, long, long, awaited follow up to World
Coming Down from 1999. No
release date yet.
Speaking of Type O,
drummer Johnny Kelly will be playing drums with Danzig, on a European
tour, starting November 21 in London and ending December 7th in Warsaw,
Poland. Kelly said
– “I have nothing but great memories of when Type O toured with
Danzig in 1994, and I’ve really been looking forward to creating some
new ones on this adventure.”
Fear Factory has
reformed: Christian Olde Wolbers (guitar/bass), Raymond Herrera (drums)
and Burton C. Bell (vocals). Posted
for download are 45-second samples of three cuts from their recently
recorded demo. Cuts are as
follows: “Slave Labor,” “Corporate Cloning” and “Archetype.”
Fear Factory’s upcoming studio album is due in late 2003. ‘Til
next time... “ONE NATION UNDERGROUND!”
