A METAL LEGACY MADE OF “LED”…

Led Zeppelin is on the charts again, as if we’re surprised, with their newest must-have, How the West Was Won.  More than 30 years later and the magic still lives on...and on...and on!

I can still remember as if it was yesterday, seeing Led Zep’s The Song Remains the Same, when it first came out in theaters.  To say I was awestruck is an understatement.  Now when I watch it on DVD, my heart still races.  I don’t know what it is about the song “No Quarter” but it still gives me goose bumps.

Most of my female friends agree that is our fave Zep song.  It will obviously be played at my funeral.

Fans of the band will back me up when I say that listening to them has always been like a religious experience.  Besides no one can fill out a pair of hip hugger jeans like Robert Plant.

Excuse me while I get a bucket of ice…

METAL MATTERS AND MEANDERINGS

Polish death metal masters, Vader will be on U.S. soil in October as guests of Nile and Kreator.  Also joining the tour are Amon Amarth and Goatwhore.  The “Art of Noise 2 Tour” will be heading our way 10-17 at Pop’s in Sauget, IL and 10-18 in Chicago at the Vic Theatre.

Metal Blade Records’ “Uncorrupted Steel Volume 2” compilation will be out in stores August 26, 2003.  Included are songs already available and some new tracks all for the low price of $6.98.  If you like mixing it up with old school metal and some new metal this is right up your alley.  Bands on the disc are –– Six Feet Under, The Heavils, God Dethroned, Tourniquet, Vehemence, Brainstorm and others.

Devin Townsend has been busy with his band putting out their new CD, “Accelerated Evolution,” producing some great metal and many side projects, including a side project of his own, with Meshuggah.  Hopefully things will be in the works before the end of the year.

Can’t get enough of progressive rock?  Maybe you should check out OSI; no not the people who created the $6 million man.  The new CD –– “Office of Strategic Influence” –– is bound to be a winner with this line-up:  Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, Kevin Moore of Chroma Key and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater.

Freya is another side project, this one from Karl, Bulldog and Eric of Earth Crisis.  The CD, “As The Last Light Drains,” is available now and according to the spin doctors, incorporates hardcore groove, is heavy yet melodic, and has positive and meaningful lyrics.

Seattle’s Nevermore will be releasing their new disc, “Enemies of Reality” July 29th.  This is the follow-up to “Dead Heart in a Dead World,” which was out two years ago.  I had a hard time getting that one out of the CD player.

News from Sweden, The Crown has nearly completed the upcoming CD, “Possessed 13”; with you guessed it, 13 tracks and will be in stores September or October.  In other related news, vocalist Johan Lindstrand, has rejoined The Crown.  To find out more go to www.thecrownonline.com/

New Jersey’s God Forbid just recorded a cover of Guns ‘N Roses “Out To Get Me” for a forthcoming tribute to G&R on Law of Inertia Records with a tentative early fall release.  Other bands on the tribute CD are ––  Dillinger Escape Plan, Unearth, Everytime I Die, Haste, and Nora.  Godhead’s new disc “Revolver” hits the streets July 15.

God Forbid will be in the studio in July with producer Eric Rachel to work on a new full-length album, to be mixed in August by Colin Richardson (Carcuss, Sepultura).  Early 2004 is the anticipated release date.  Plans are now in the works for a full U.S. tour, late summer.

Ozzfest 2003  –– 14 hours of music provided by 21 bands –– just absolutely screams, “Summer”!

It’s hard to believe Ozzy has been thrilling fans for 33 years and for the last 8 years 4 million metal freaks have devoured his annual Ozzfest.

“The Village of the Damned” concourse at Ozzfest, has been improved with state-of-the-art video games, piercing booths and the best tattoo artists, plus some new surprises.

The main stage bands are Korn (their 1st Ozzfest appearance), Disturbed, Marilyn Manson, Chevelle and The Datsuns (July 20-30 only).

The second stage showcases –– Cradle of Filth, Voivod, Depswa, Endo, Grade 8, Hotwire, Killswitch Engage, Memento, Motograter, Nothingface, The Revolution Smile, Shadows Fall, Sworn Enemy, Twisted Method and Unloco.

Ozzy and band mates, Zakk Wylde, Jason Newsted and Michael Bordin will wreak havoc on Chicago’s Tweeter Center July 20th.

Be good to yourself, get out and see some shows and don’t forget to support your local scene!

‘Til next time… “ONE NATION UNDERGROUND!”
