With Sarah Lounges
“PEOPLE SUCK…Teens Too!” There are times when I
look around and find that people sicken me with the way they behave and the lack
of respect they have for others. This
is true of adults (as I see while driving with my friends) as well as teens.
Teens cry that we are
discriminated against because of our age and are treated unfairly by adults.
Too often, I’ve come to see the reason why.
I still believe that most of us are pretty good kids, but there seem to
be more and more troublemakers or “bad apples” in our ranks.
Day to day observation
makes me realize that an awful lot of teenagers seem to be failing to develop
mentally and emotionally.
In short, if I may be
blunt and to the point – there seems to be a lot more “assholes” to
contend with on a day to day basis.
Blame is laid in a lot
of places –– broken homes, Eminem,
Marilyn Manson, videos games, etc. –– take your pick!
While outside things
and our personal environment can and
does affect us, the bottom line is that we ultimately chose to be who we are and
how we behave.
There have always been
teenage troublemakers and vandalism has always happened, but my generation seems
to have a bumper crop of what my grandfather would have termed –– “a
bunch of disrespectful hoodlums.”
Maybe I should give
some explanation on how I came to this new revelation.
Sound goofy?
Yeah...at first I thought it was pretty stupid too, but now that the
40-plus web-footed wonders have been appearing around the town, I have to admit
that they are cute. And...they have succeeded in getting more people walking our
downtown streets and visiting the downtown area.
The “Downtown
Ducks” promotion is supposed to run through fall, when the colorful
and customized ducks will be auctioned off.
Less than two weeks into the promotion, a number of the ducks had already
been vandalized. One of those defaced
was the Highland High School Theatre Company duck, which naturally made me more
than a mite angry. Although the
damage to that one was considerably less than that which others have suffered.
While I am sure not
all the damage has been conveyed by teens [there are plenty of moronic adults
too!], a good deal of it has. Word
does get around you know...
One really cute baby duck which sat with it’s
“Daddy” duck in front of one of the downtown banks, had its leg broken and
had to be sent off for repairs. Now
we have a garish red construction cone in it’s place.
And all because some stupid “loser” with no life and no respect felt
the need to haul off and kick it. Bet
his mother would be proud of his behavior.
I know this is what
happened, because someone I know and trust saw the idiot who did it one late
Thursday night last month.
Seriously, do these
slime balls have nothing better to do with their time then destroy and deface
someone else’s property? These
kind of people are freakin’ pathetic. How can any “normal” person teen or
otherwise, not be disgusted by this kind of ridiculous human behavior.
A prime example of
more stupid and senseless behavior by teens was witnessed a few weeks ago at an
all-ages concert featuring a pair of great local teen bands, held at
Highland’s Main Square Park. As
usual, 98 percent of the teens there behaved well, socializing and enjoying the
music.
But there were a
couple of teens who decided to repeatedly whack their skateboards against a
couple of the parks new lamp posts until some alert adults finally yelled at
them to [and I quote] -- “Stop
that...you hoodlums!” What’s wrong with people? Highland taxpayers [including... duh... their parents] paid
tons of money to have these lamp posts put in as part of the downtown
renovation. Have a little respect
for your hometown.
We
teens often complain that no one ever does anything for kids around here.
Do you have to wonder why, when this kind of behavior is shown?
How does anyone get
any pleasure in just trashing things? Go
out and kick a duck statue! Oh boy,
you’re a real rebel now. I’ll
bet the ghost of James Dean is hovering over you and is real proud.
NOT!
I have always tried to
defend my generation, but there comes a point when a person just cannot condone
the things that one sees going on around them.
We teens need to do
our collective best to let the simple-minded members of our generation know that
this kind of disturbing and “low-brow” behavior is not appreciate nor is it
thought to “be cool.”
With all the money
that has been put into these “Downtown
Ducks” and the rest of the downtown town beautification, I hope the
Highland Police can catch some of these vandals and make an example out of them.
If that sounds harsh, too bad. Sorry
to say, but any teen behaving badly reflects on all teens.
Being a teen myself, I would like to see the “bad apples” of our
region picked and shipped out.
That’s all the opinionating I’m doing...for now! I’ll see you back here in August to kiss off summer.
