THE NUTS & Bolts

TRUE TO YOUR “ROOTS”

MONTHLY COLUMN

by Diane Demeter

My first epiphany was realizing I was different.  Later “different” was changed to “freak,” and in my eyes that’s not a bad thing.

Hence why I carved “freak” into my leg, as a young teen.  I never wanted to forget, who I was.

After picking up Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” album at a yard sale for a quarter, I felt like I was home.   Metal music is the ONLY thing that has stood by my side and remained a constant in my roller coaster of a ride called life.  But as life took a toll, I found that I let metal drift away.

The more things change, the more they stay the same…a series of events and coincidences led me back on the right track and back “home” to metal.

A young man named Harley Davidson, had a significant impact on me.  He took his mother and I to the first metal show I had seen in a long time.  We were hesitant but he insisted.  Of course he dumped us in the parking lot, to experience it by ourselves.

I owe a lot to him. I am especially grateful that he pushed me back into the metal realm.  He taught me the importance of staying true to one’s roots and how a person should never be ashamed of who you are, where you came from, and doing what it is that you love.  To do anything less makes a person a complete phony!

It really warmed my heart when later one  he was the one who was asking me if there was any new music that he should be watching out for –– what a twist.

Thanks Harley, this month’s column is dedicated to you!   RIP: 9/14/74 – 5/02/03.  Save a place for me in Head banging Heaven.

SI HABLA HEADBANGING

This is for all of you Spanish-speaking metal heads!  The Metal Blade Records website is now viewable in Spanish.

The site will be updated weekly with all the features the other Metal Blade sites have.  Also included is the Metal Blade Records store where you can find LP’s, CD’s, shirts, tapes and oh so much more.  http://metalblade.com/spanish/metalbladestart.html

Be on the look out for the Life Of Agony DVD.  In January, two sold out shows were filmed and according to McGathy Edge, who manages them, the DVD has killer packaging, great sound and the film quality is amazing.

ALERT:  Rob Halford’s much bally-hooed Metal Gods Tour has been abruptly cancelled.  Halford will be back this summer to play those shows with Testament and others.  No official word as to why the tour stopped.

Motorhead and Anthrax are touring together. Damn, my neck aches just thinking about that!

Therapy? released their new CD, “High Anxiety”, on May 20.  In this crazy world we live in, couldn’t we all use a little Therapy?

On June 7, Chicago’s Metro is the place to be for all the head banging you can stand!  Check out The Haunted, Bleeding Through, Darkest Hour and Shai Hulud.  Shows like this make me jealous, that my Peoria-based butt is not residing closer to Chicago.

It’s official!  Cannibal Corpse has reached Platinum status with 1,000,000 combined sales of all their albums.  Can you hear the slap upside the head to all the posers?  Hallelujah, Death Metal is being taken seriously, as well it should.  That’s one hell of an achievement.

Fates Warning will be supporting Queensryche and Dream Theater, heading your way at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago July 19.  This summer is going to be one hot and heavy metal rowdy good time!!

Updates from Relapse Records:  After almost three years, Dying Fetus, one of the most celebrated underground Death Metal bands, is in your face with “Stop At Nothing.”   Get your copy now!

Mortician’s “Darkest Day of Horror” is also out in stores right now!  Roger Beaujard is moving to guitar, so Mortician is looking for a live drummer.  If you’re man enough, interested applicants can contact Roger at: roger@mortician.net

Alabama Thunderpussy has amicably parted ways with Johnny Throckmorton, who has been along for the ride since the beginning -- six years. Any vocalists interested in the position can apply at: alabamathunder@hotmail.com or relapserecords@relapse.com

In the meantime buy their new CD, “Constellation.”

Genocide Superstars are tearing things up in a big way with “Superstar Destroyer”, featuring Mieszko Tararczyk (of Nasum) on guitar and vocals.

A new website has been launched for Agoraphobic Nosebleed, just in time for their latest effort, “Altered States of America,” an ambitious 100 song/3-CD set.  Yeah, this is where the nosebleed comes in…

If you like your metal so heavy it hurts, then you have to lay down some cold, hard cash for Relapse Records newest compilation, “Contaminated 5.0.”    I’ve lost track of how many Contaminated comps Relapse has put out over the years, but they always prove to be a nasty little, pleasure/treasure.

Amorphis fans have good reason to scream from the rooftops in anticipation of their 10th Anniversary CD, “Chapters,” with all the highlights of their career to date.  This milestone of recordings will be issued in deluxe packaging, with plenty of liner notes, DVD Rom and a few surprises.

‘Til next time… “ONE NATION UNDERGROUND!”
