AMY
GRANT:
Hymns From Her
On Saturday, May 25th,
the internationally renown singer/songwriter
Amy Grant appeared at the
Family Christian Center in N.W. Indiana to promote her first new studio
album in nearly four years –– Legacy...Hymns
& Faith. The
event turned out to be equal parts –– acoustic concert,
meet ‘n’ greet, and press junket.
The evening began with a brief press
conference where Grant fielded a barrage of questions from radio, TV and
print media sorts. Oddly
enough, my dad fired off the session’s first question and I poised the
final one.
To his credit, her
superstar hubby Vince Gill hung
out in the next room eavesdropping through a sliding glass window, so as
not to distract from his wife being the media focal point.
I found his gesture to be very sweet and thoughtful.
Following the press
conference our little group was invited to remain behind with Grant for a
personal chat and meeting. Then
she was whisked away to prepare for the performance segment. The concert
started with a 20-minute DVD, showing us a behind the scenes look at the
making of the Legacy
CD, which Gill co-produced, arranged and also performed on with Grant.
After that Amy and Vince came out and started the show.
It was a very laid-back show. So much so, that at one point two
ladies even brought up a bag of Lays potato chips that the duo munched on
between songs.
After every couple of
songs, people could come up to one of two microphones and ask questions of
the artists or tell stories about how their music affected their
respective lives. One young
man requested her chart-topping hit, “Baby
Baby,” which everyone was very excited to hear her sing.
A lot of young children asked questions too, which thrilled Grant,
who is herself the mother of kids ranging in age from 1 to 14.
The youngsters asked
questions like –– “Do you like
to dance?”, “When did you first experience Jesus?”, “Where do you
go to be a singer?” and others.
One little boy
asked Amy how old you have to be to sing on stage.
She asked him his age and he replied –– “Six!” –– and
she told him that was the
right age and invited him up to sing “Jesus
Loves Me” with them. The
little boy beamed with delight as he took his place next to Amy to sing.
It was really adorable.
Grant did a great job
involving the audience in her show. When
she sang “Thy Word Is A Lamp Unto
My Feet,” Amy asked the
FCC choir to join in, and near the end she asked the audience if they
would rather hear ten more minutes of music or have a longer CD signing.
The audience opted for more music which seemed to please Grant, who
had earlier told my dad that while she loves meeting fans and signing
autographs, she would much rather spend her time singing for them.
For the last song, Vince and Amy did a powerful duet on “Nothin’
But The Blood Of Jesus”.
This was the second such appearance they had made that same day,
the first being in South Bend that morning.
Though she was visibly tired and was looking a tad bit frazzled by
the evening’s end, Grant’s demeanor and personality throughout proved
to be as sweet as her voice. What
a classy couple!
Joey McIntyre To Hit Chicago
Joey McIntyre is
starting off a 20-city tour supporting his new project, “One
Man Show With Two People,” featuring him and his collaborator
friend, Emanuel “Eman” Kiriakou.
There will be no back-up band, no entourage, no flashy dance
numbers. Just Joey behind a
mic and Eman on guitar. They will perform some of Joey’s solo hits, as well as a
few songs by other artists. there
will also be a few tracks off Joey’s latest album, Meet
Joe Mac.
“One Man Show With Two
People” will at Chicago’s House Of Blues on Wednesday, June 12th.
Michael
Jackson: the actor?
The Gary, Indiana-born Michael
Jackson is no stranger to horror.
In the long-form clip of his music video, “Thriller,”
Michael turned into a werewolf and danced like a zombie. It seems that Michael would like to experience being one
again, because he may soon be starring in a new werewolf movie called, “Wolfed.”
He may even invest $20 million in personal funds to produce it at
his own Neverland Pictures company. If
Michael does the movie, he would portray the son of a 17th-century
shoemaker who turns into a werewolf after making a deal with the Devil.
More on this as it develops.
Time
for singles...
The new single from my good buddies in BBMak,
is called –– “Out Of My Heart
(Into Your Head).” It’s
release date has been moved up to June 25th.
I haven’t heard it yet, but I’m sure the guys will not let us
down!
“Work It Out,”
featured in the soundtrack to the third installment of the Austin Powers
film series, Goldmember, will also be the first single off of Beyonce
Knowles’ (of Destiny’s Child) debut solo album, Dangerously In Love, which
is due sometime in October.
Beyonce, who stars in the film wearing a retro-Afro wig, will also
have another song on the soundtrack, “Hey,
Goldmember.” That track was written by Mike
Myers and samples K.C. &
The Sunshine Band’s 1976 dance floor classic, “Shake
Your Booty.”
Well, that’s all for this month.
I would like to close by wishing my dad –– “Happy
Birthday!” –– since he will turn 43 June 6th!
C-ya next month!
