THE NUTS : Heavy To The Coar

MONTHLY COLUMN

This kind of weather (a whopping 9 degrees, not including the wind chill) is just right for listening to “Black Winter Day” by Amorphis, from the “Tales From The Thousand Lakes” CD.  Now that I have that off my chest, let’s get down to business with your monthly dose of all that is metal, from this perky purveyor of pounding sound…

In Flames will be heading to the U.S. soon.  The song “Drifter,” from their most recent CD, “Reroute To Remain,” will be included on the upcoming Playstation 2 and XBOX Jet Ski racing game “Splashdown 2,” due in June, from THQ.  Their CD was nominated for a Swedish Grammy with the awards ceremony being in mid-February.

One of the coolest promo items I received, when I was doing radio, was two sets of In Flames earplugs, in a special carrying case.  They haven’t been used yet, for obvious reasons, and probably never will.

Systematic has a new CD, “Pleasure To Burn” featuring some killer drumming by Slayer’s Paul Bostaph.

Brick Bath’s full-length CD Rebuilt, with 14 tracks, will be up for grabs March 25. To order: www.crashmusicinc.com.  A three month tour of the U.S. will start in mid February, including a live on-air performance for the XM Satellite Radio Network VIP Performance Series on April 14, 2003.

The Jan/Feb issue of Terrorizer’s “2002 Readers Poll” voted Cattle Decapitation as one of the “Top Ten Newcomers.”  Other bands that made the list are: Killswitch Engage, Decapitated and Mastadon.

Bal-Sagoth’s 10-year anniversary plans, for 2003 start off with their 6th studio album.  This effort is supposedly much darker than anything released, thus far and incorporates their heaviness from the early stuff and the style of their most recent CD’s.

A series of graphic novels are in the works, set within the mythological world/lyrics.  Also a film studio, based in Burbank, CA is interested in producing an animated Bal-Sagoth-based fantasy film.  To find out more: www.bal-sagoth.co.uk

Somewhere in Chicago on Sunday, April 20 “The United Tour” will be in town.  As of this writing the venue had yet to be announced.  The tour includes –– Pigface, Thrill Kill Kult, Zeromancer (Norway) and Bile, with DJ Scary Lady Sarah, Candy XXX of Bozo Porno Circus, Kami of Apocalypse Theatre and MK Ultra ViXXXens.  This would be the show to see, if you’re sick to death of the same old, same old….

“Faceless” is the new CD from Godsmack arriving April 8.  Shannon Larkin (ex-Amen) will be the new drummer on this release. Word has it they may be on the road as early as May, reportedly with Sevendust and possibly this summer on some European festival dates with Metallica.

If you’re not acquainted with Meshuggah’s music, you definitely need to be.   In early February rehearsals started in Sweden for a Scandinavian tour, in March and will be in the U.S. for about 4-weeks.  No support bands are confirmed at this time.  Actually it doesn’t matter who the hell plays with Meshuggah, if you know what I mean and if not, trust me.

David Ellefson, former Megadeth bassist has joined with ex-Anthrax guitarist, Dan Spitz and Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain to form a new project and as-yet-unnamed group.  They are said to follow an “extremely heavy” musical direction.  Six months ago the recording sessions started for their debut release and no word as to who will be doing the vocal duties or which label will pick them up.

Former Midwest BEAT metal gal, Wendy (aka The Bison) is alive and well and still involved in the metal scene with The Heavy Metal Appreciation Society, which was born in August 1999, by a few metal freaks who just wanted a place to discuss their favorite subject: metal.    Three years and 10 official band forums have passed and the HMAS is up to 473 members.

Also –– www.HMAS.org –– is another great resource for news, reviews, opinions, and interviews.   The Bison came across the site after an unofficial band forum opened.  She recalls, “I really came here to flame it, heh.  I ended up bullying two moderators around like two helpless Girl Scouts and was nominated to take their places.”  The Bison is an administrator and involved in the forum, for the site.

Official band forums include: Darkane, Ion Vein, and Thyfring.  The unofficial forums getting attention are tributes to In Flames, Hammerfall and Ronnie James Dio.  Besides all that great stuff you can also check out open discussion and music trade forums.

“No post gets past me.  I love this site.  This is home,” says Bison.  She wants to extend an open invitation to the Midwest BEAT metal fans to see for themselves.  Go to: www.hmas.org

registration is free.  FYI: They are looking for dedicated metal heads to join the cause.

Kataklysm is on tour showcasing material from “In Shadows and Dust” and joining the trip is Hate Eternal, Dying Fetus and Into Eternity.  This show will be wicked!  So go check ‘em out March 7th at Rockhouse USA in Aurora, IL.

MTV 2’s Extreme Rock Show will be adding their video for, “In Shadows and Dust,” into rotation and it should be airing end of February.

Kataklysm’s long time drummer, Max Duhamel left the band unexpectedly and responded by saying he was just tired of it.  Last minute replacement J-F Richard (Blastfame/Eon Dissonance) will fill in for the tour, but will not join the band permanently.
