THE NUTS & Bolts

MONTHLY COLUMN

by Diane Demeter

It’s hard to believe November is upon us and I’m another year older (which bites), but wiser.  Not too bad of a pay off.  Getting up every morning, unassisted is something we surely take for granted?

“Tis the Season To Give Thanks...

Hey Tom Lounges… THANKS for allowing me the honor of writing for The Midwest BEAT, as I continue the pleasure of doing so, for the third year!  Thanks to the readers who take the time to read this column.  It’s always good to know someone gives a sh*t!

Metal News To Use...

So much going on in the metal world, as fall usually is a busy time for the music industry.  Let me fill you in...

Falconer finally has a new lead guitarist, Jimmy Hedlund.  Recording is set to start in late December and an anticipated early May release is scheduled for their fourth album titled, Grime VS. Grandeur.

A lot of buzz surrounding Kill Radio is abound, with the debut album, Raised On Whipped Cream.  You got to love that title.  If you’re into punk you ought to check them out, www.killradiorevolution.com

Blind Guardian has a double DVD, that’s in stores already, Imaginations Through The Looking Glass.  Over two hours of live footage shot at the BG Festival in Coburg, Germany, in 5.1 Surround Sound, and bonus videos.

A co-headlining tour with Damage Plan, The Haunted and Shadows Fall is in progress, through December 4th.   This is Shadows Fall first nationwide tour in support of the new, 10-track CD, The War Within, which debuted at #20 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, it’s first week out. That’s pretty damn impressive.

The bands are swapping closing spots each night. Midwest BEAT metalheads can catch them all kicking ass and taking names at Chicago’s House Of Blues on November 21.

Tampa Bay boys, Six Feet Under are already in the studio working on the follow-up to, Bringer Of Blood.  Chris Barnes is producing and says, “…the material is dark and demented, and is not uplifting.”

SFU’s has never been uplifting and not befitting of their style. I just don’t get into much uplifting music.  Hence why there isn’t any Neil Diamond or Stryper in my music collection. HA

Also from Tampa Bay, Obituary is in the studio, working on new material, due out in 2005.  Their last CD was Back From The Dead, clear back in 1997, too long if you ask me.

Obituary most recently had a 14-date stint in Europe and is looking to set up a few limited shows in the States.  It’s been rocky for the band, having to contend with the aftermath of repeated hurricanes. Be sure to update yourself and look up: www.obituary.cc/

Pig Destroyer has released Terrifyer.  Can they live up to the great reviews they received for their previous, Prowler In The Yard?

Diecast is pushing the new CD, Tearing Down Your Blue Skies.  I really like this band; always have.  How about Strapping Young Lad with their DVD, For Those About To Rock, released this month.

Also to watch for this month: King’s X have a double-live album, Live All Over The Place, recorded while on their most recent North American Tour.  Includes the groups’ classics and even an acoustic segment, featuring songs rarely played.

If you are into Stoner Rock that really kicks ass, don’t screw up; get a ticket for this unbelievably awesome line-up –– Clutch, Fu Manchu and High On Fire at the Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago on November 30th.     If you are up for a little road trip, you can also see them December 1st at Pop’s in Sauget, IL

A couple of years ago I saw a partial show of Fu Manchu and The Stepkings in Champaign.  I had to leave early to do my radio show, which sucked. Fu Manchu was and is incredible and the show had so much energy, not one person was standing still.

Cradle of Filth is out on the road again, this time around with Arch Enemy, Bleeding Through and Himsa. Catch them live on December 7th at the House Of Blues in Chicago.

It wouldn’t hurt to jot this date down even though it’s a ways off.  On February 11, Pop’s in Sauget, Illinois, will be the tour stop for – Suffocation, Behemoth, Black Dahlia Murder and Cattle Decapitation. If you want to save your gas, just two nights later, the tour hits Chicago’s House of Blues.

Hell, there’s even a nationwide Heavycore Tour in the works, for the summer of 2005.

Heavycore founder Pete Altieri says, “I’m going to have bands from the various regions of the country host a string of dates.  We’ll string those dates across the country and go from one coast to another.”

As always, all Heavycore activities are updated frequently at www.heavycore.net

Next month I’ll get you up to speed on more Heavycore projects.

Here’s hoping your Thanksgiving is a great one, with good friends, food and music!  CHEERS!

      Till Next Time…ONE NATION UNDERGROUND!
