MONTHLY COLUMN by Diane Demeter LABOR DAY LAZINESS SIGNALS SUMMER’S END Labor Day
weekend was a complete wash out, so I was lazy as hell, but that’s the
point right? I spent
entirely too much time on that Monday watching the “American
Choppers” marathon, and tipping the shot glass.
I guess I accomplished something, after all. I’ve been writing
like a fiend and had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Chris Barnes of Six Feet
Under. You can check
out the Barnes interview on the Heavycore web site, www.heavycore.org Summer is on the way out, but things are in full gear for new releases, new tours and local shows. METAL
WORLD NEWS… Here’s just a
little taste of what METAL
has to offer… Nuclear Blast Records has recently
signed Cathedral.
A new CD is due out in early 2004.
It will be a follow up to last year’s, The
VIIth Coming. I’m
sure it will be worth the wait for the Doom Metal fans.
Also signed to Nuclear
Blast is LA’s Fireball Ministry.
Their label debut, The Second Great Awakening, is actually their third effort.
A late September release was anticipated, so maybe it’s out by
the time you are reading these words. This disc is produced by Nick
Raskulinecz, (Foo Fighters,
Marilyn Manson, Velvet Revolver and Danzig).
Fireball Ministry is hard rock with a
distinct metal edge. They
don’t sing about politics, human suffering or anything else negative.
They are worthy of a listen, if you are looking for some tuneage
on the lighter side of things.
Immortal is no
more, obviously NOT living up to their name. The following is a statement recently released by the band
and it’s management. “After 13 years and seven albums we have decided to stop working with
Immortal due to personal reasons. A
great thanks to all our fans worldwide who helped us, making Immortal
superb through all this time.”
Signed by Abbath, Demonaz and Horgh.
The new Cannibal
Corpse website has been relaunched.
The features include a new message board, album lyrics, extended
pictures page and fans can also ask the band questions and submit
photos. www.cannibalcorpse.net Spineshank’s third CD, Self-Destructive
Pattern, is now out in stores screaming to be listened to.
It is supposedly the band’s heaviest material to date, you
decide. www.roadrun.com/selfdestructivepattern
If you purchase the disc at Tower.com you can get it autographed.
Spineshank is on the
road with Ill Nino.
October 21st, right
before Halloween no less, is when King
Diamond’s newest offering, The
Puppet Master, hits the streets worldwide.
A bonus disc is included of KD in full make-up, telling the story
of The
Puppet Master.
Diamond will be on
tour with Entombed, Single
Bullet Theory and Nocturne,
(who missed out on a chance to tour with KMFDM,
since already committing to the tour with King
Diamond). This will be
the first time he’s toured the U.S. since the release of House Of God.
The closest he will be to the Midwest at press time, is in
Milwaukee, WI at The Rave on
Halloween night.
You Punk, Hardcore and
Metal fans will be pleased to know Benumb
has a new 22 track set now in stores titled, By Means Of Upheaval.
The brutal
Australians, Blooduster also
has a new full-length album out, Drink,
Fight, F*ck! (D.F.F.), released on Relapse
Records. The band
comments, “It contains some of the catchiest and heaviest stuff we
have ever done.”
New York City
undergrounders, Unsane will
finally put out a greatest hits collection, Lambhouse,
in October. The CD/DVD
package contains all of the bands video clips, including the
never-before-seen, “Body Bomb.” Experience
it live, October 10th in Chicago, at the Bottom
Lounge, with the Turbo AC’s.
The Unnatural Born Killers Tour is heading to Chicago’s Metro on November 3... The pit will surely be packed, as these bands will be taking the stage –– Skinless, Six Feet Under, Behemoth and The Black Dahlia Murder.
Unfortunately for us,
no one can even come close to possessing the unique talent of The Man In
Black. It makes his death
even more depressing.
Luckily, I was
fortunate enough to catch several hours of a 12-hour marathon of his
music, on a local radio station. It
made the loss a little easier and the memories a little sweeter!
Cash truly was the
first real “crossover” artist.
His rendition of NIN’s,
“Hurt,” was much more
disturbing, than the original. Just
hearing him do Depeche Mode’s,
“Personal Jesus,” you’d swear he penned that for himself.
Only Cash could pull that off so damn, convincingly.
While still reeling
from the news of Cash’s death, I got word that Jerry “Pork” Armstrong, of Pork
and The Havana Ducks fame, had met his maker, too.
He was forever doing
festivals and fairs, especially in Wisconsin. He had been popular in the
Midwest for 30 years. He most recently played for The Harley Davidson Motorcycle’s 100th Anniversary, in Milwaukee.
Probably his most well liked song, “Puking
In The Parking Lot”, was an anthem for die-hard partiers!
Okay these guys
aren’t Metal but they both had plenty of roots in Rock. Armstrong was
a Midwest rock icon and mainstay on the scene.
And there is no denying that Cash had affected and influenced
nearly everyone who has stepped up to a microphone or picked up a guitar
since he blew onto the charts in the late 1950s!
RIP!
"Til next time… “ONE NATION UNDERGROUND!”
