MONTHLY COLUMN by Diane Demeter
Last month was the Nightwish concert, at The House of Blues. Hopefully you had a chance to catch the show, supporting their new CD, Once. My brother went, and said it was phenomenal. This band is slowly but surely putting a dent in the metal scene and getting the attention they deserve. They have been around a while with several CD’s under their belt, all of which are excellent! More great shows to attend are on the horizon, such as The Cannibal Corpse Tour with Napalm Death, Kataklysm, Vader and Goatwhore, November 13th at the House Of Blues in Chicago. Slayer returns to kick Chicago’s ass, on November 5th at the Aragon Ballroom with the Jagermeister Music Tour. Also along for the show are Mastadon and Killswitch Engage. Champ’s in Burbank, IL is hosting a Heavycore Poser Roast, October 30th, a 21 and older show with a killer costume party. Chicago’s Heavycore band Pist set up the Roast featuring Human Hatemachine, Vesicant, Skank and Loknut. Happy 5th Anniversary to Heavycore! Upcoming Heavycore Poser Roasts set up for Madison and Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Cincinnati, OH, and Atlanta, GA. Six Feet Under is set to release Graveyard Classics 2, October 19th. Graveyard Classics contained various covers but the second one will cover an album in its entirety, AC/DC’s Back In Black (20x Platinum, no less). SFU is the first metal band to accomplish it. I can’t wait to hear their version of “Givin’ the Dog A Bone”. That song is so kick ass! I wore that freakin’ cassette out. Back in the day (minimum wage $3.10), I had to be at work at 6 a.m. and AC/DC was a great way to wake the hell up! My stereo system was way cooler than my ride. For example, one time I got a speeding ticket, after I was followed for a mile, with the cherries going and the siren wailing. Couldn’t hear sh*t, except the stereo and man, was that county cop pissed. I haven’t changed much…you can drive your phone booths and I’ll drive the concert hall! After a stint in South America last month, Cradle of Filth will be hitting the states in October and November, in support of their newest onslaught of nastiness, Nymphetamine, out just recently. The video for the title track is now online or check out the e-card at: www.roadrun.com/cof God Dethroned is in the process of recording their latest venture, The Lair, in Sweden and be available in January on Metal Blade Records. One of the song titles for this CD caught my attention, “Last Zip of Spit”… go figure. Bolt Thrower vocalist, Dave Ingram has left the band (after six years) due to health and personal problems. The band was ready to record their eighth CD, the follow-up to Honour, Valour, Pride (2001). This BT release is the only one with Ingram on vocals. The project is on hold until they acquire a new singer. Roadrunner Records is doing an outstanding job of putting out quality music with the Two From the Vault series. Next ones up are Annihilator – Set the World On Fire/InCommand, Gorguts – Considered Dead/Erosion of Sanity and Merciful Fate – Don’t Break the Oath/Return of the Vampire. Also for your listening pleasure, The Best Of, one from Annihilator and one from Coal Chamber. RR doesn’t stop there, as they continue with the Reissue/Remaster series; Disincarnate – Dreams of the Carrion Kind, Carnivore – self-titled (1985) 15 tracks and Retaliation (1987) 11 tracks. This is Carnivore’s second and final studio release, including three demo tracks not appearing on the original release. If you didn’t already know, Peter Steele was in Carnivore before the beloved Type O Negative came to be. I did hear a sound bite of Carnivore a long time ago, but I can’t remember what it sounded like. At the time the CD’s were out of print. So this is at the top of my Christmas list.
NO BIG SURPRISE
Cattle Decapitation was given the opportunity to change the cover of Humanure, after receiving too many complaints from people who were unable to find the album. Music stores shied away from the CD due to the graphic nature of the cover (a steer dumping bloody human remains). According to the band, “We’re going to go with the image that’s on the back of the current layout in protest to censorship. It’s a barren wasteland that (now in hindsight, cryptically) now symbolizes the ill effect of censorship, as well as the fallout left by the apocalypse known as humanity. Void of flavor and life. Exactly the way this world will be when it cures itself of the disease.” The original cover is still around, although now a limited edition on vinyl, through Deep Six Records. Original cover art by Benscoter can be viewed at: www.cattledecapitation.com/ Hey.... Happy Halloween!
