MIDWEST RUMBLINGS: Local Music Demos & Samplers
by David Alan Buco
Like most columnists, I have a deadline to turn in my column
to the
editor. Mine is by the 15th of each month. On the 10th of September, my
final draft for "Midwest Rumblings" was complete and awaiting the
final
polish before faxing it to Midwest Beat for publication. I went to sleep
that night only to wake up the next morning, September 11th, 2001, in horror.
I turned on CNN, as I do every morning, and saw a gaping hole in one of
the
World Trade Center towers and minutes later the other one being struck by a
jet airliner. It wasn’t long before I, and others across this great
nation,
realized that New York, indeed the nation, was in the midst of a terrorist
attack.
Later, another jet struck the Pentagon and yet another
crashed less that
100 miles outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. We would all later learn that at
least
three men on that doomed flight that crashed in Pennsylvania attempted to
overtake the hijackers and in the process crashed. Every passenger and
crew
member of that ill-fated flight, in particular those three brave souls, are
national heroes. There’s no telling how many lives they saved by
sacrificing
their own.
All in all, more than 260 passengers and crew
died in these hijackings,
nearly 300 died at the Pentagon, and at the World Trade Center at least 5,000
are missing and presumed dead, that includes some 300 fire, rescue, and
police personnel.
In light of all this, I missed my deadline. I
would not have been
objective and focused enough. And to be honest, my heart was not in it.
For
that I apologize to those of you who look forward to this column each month
to hear about the latest “bubbling under” bands.
To the bands – Neotribe, Three Quarter Sex Bolt, Patchwork
and Mad Logic
– I also apologize and I’m sure you all understand. Your reviews which
were
to be published this month, will appear in this column next month (November).
President George W. Bush said it best – “Terrorist
attacks can shake
the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the
foundation of America.”
Pray for the dead and their families and friends, pray for
the survivors
and pray for those who will die in the coming war. God Bless America.
