METALFEST BETTER THAN EXPECTED

The eagerly anticipated Central Illinois Metal Fest on August 16, was all it set out to be and much more. I saw more chicks at this event than I ever had at metal shows before.  Great to see!!!  Tons of underground metal CD’s for sale and serious metal heads brought back packs to fill up.

The atmosphere was great, always the good vibes amongst the fans and between the bands.  I loved checking out all the t-shirts worn by the fans.  The only one I can mention is the, “Balls So Big Should Be Considered A Sport.”  The others were shockingly gross, but most creative, actually more graphic than any Cradle shirts.

The Canopy Club was a great choice of venue.  Plenty of room to move around, the bathrooms weren’t trashed and as always, there were no security problems. It was less than 15 minutes between bands, as most used the backline gear.  There will be another fest next year, because everything went so smoothly.

Von Young, formerly of the Death Metal band Deaden, was in attendance and took the stage with Lividity, for one song, for old times sake.  It had been 6 years since he last growled into a microphone.  The crowd went nuts, as there was plenty of Deaden fans around.  It was a fine surprise!  It was fitting Von was there, because he started the metal fest scene in Champaign/Urbana, in the mid-90’s.

Fleshgrind ragged on the crowd for not being rowdy enough, but had a good mosh pit going, for their set.  Waco Jesus were all about fan appreciation, the singer was pouring cans of beer into the mouths of the die-hard fans, in the pit.  Sadomasochism gets the award for having the ultimate head banging hair, in sync guitar performance and being buff.  Low Twelve tried out new material, which had a little different flavor, but nonetheless kicked ass!

Unfortunately the headliner Incantation’s van broke down outside Peoria, and two bands from Michigan couldn’t make it due to the problems associated with the black out.  Nothing you can do about it, except to move on…

A BIG Shout Out goes to Matt Bishop of Lividity, for all the work he put into organizing the event!

METAL WORLD NEWS AND DECLARATIONS…

Anthems of Rebellion is the new disc from Sweden’s Arch Enemy, hence the “Anthems of Rebellion Tour U.S.A. Tour 2003.”   This mini-tour started in late August and will be in Chicago on September 3 at The Bottom Lounge.  Hate Eternal, Evergrey and Black Dahlia Murder will be along for the ride.

“Beyond the Embrace Tour” will also be making a stop in Chicago on October 8th at the Vic Theatre.  Helloween and Jag Panzer will balance things out quite nicely.

Brooklyn boys Life of Agony have an upcoming release, in the works, a live CD/DVD.  Keep your eyes open for that one!

Tourniquet’s, Ted Kirkpatrick will release his first “drum solos” DVD on September 1st.  You get a lot of bang for your buck with this little treasure.  Included is 50 minutes from the original “Unreleased Drum Solos of Ted Kirkpatrick” video, bonus footage, new recordings, extended drum solos and some never before seen footage of drum tracking for “Where Moth and Rust Destroy.” The DVD is available for preorder for $20. The 1st 1,000 DVD’s will contain a special surprise.  Order at www.tourniquet.net

Nevermore has hit #1 on the CMJ Loud Rock charts, as well they should!  They will be touring, this November and December with Dimmu Borgir, Hypocrisy, and Children of Bodom.  See what all the fuss is about at The House of Blues in Chicago on November 9th.

Falconer is set to release The Sceptre of Deception on November 4th.  Then on November 21st will come the newest effort from Vader, with Blood Plus Reign Forever World.

Six Feet Under’s new disc Bringer of Blood is in stores now.  The track, “Amerika the Brutal,” will be used as a forthcoming music video.

HEAVYCORE UPDATE…

The membership totals almost 900 bands as of this writing.  The brutality belted out by this organization is phenomenal and the momentum keeps gaining.

Heavycore’s first DVD to be out this fall on Heavycore Records is a video compilation titled, Roasting Posers Volume I.   With such a wide array of worldwide metal membership, it will be interesting to see which bands will make the final cut.  One band that is definitely on the DVD is Malevolent Creation with live footage from their recent European Tour.

Heavycore Records already has Core Til’ Death I and II compilations and Low Twelve’s CD, Unfit for Human Occupancy plus the DVD, Maggot Ridden Rotten Movie, all in one fine jewel case.

If you have not hooked up with Heavycore already, get involved online by logging on at: www.heavycore.org

Speaking of which...  The shaved-headed harbringer of Heavycore -- Pete Altieri -- will be shaking things up in N.W. Indiana come November.  Midwest BEAT is showcasing Pete’s slammin’ band Low Twelve on November 14 at McCool’s in South Haven.

Though they have ripped it up in Chicago in the past, this show will mark the heaviest band in Central Illinois’ first time in the Hoosier State.  The region’s cornfields will NEVER be the same again...I promise!

Joining Low Twelve on stage at The BEAT’s “Hard ‘N’ Heavy – No Turkeys Bash!”  will be Chicagoland favorites Cryptic Visions (who sport a new chick singer who growls, howls and headbangs with the best of them!) and Michigan City’s newly reconstructed Killjoy.  Closing the show will be TERMINAL FIX!

Log on www.midwestbeat.com to keep current on this slamfest!
