Welcome back to my little corner of Midwest BEAT. Wait…do you hear that? Silence…what a pleasant sound! That’s right, it’s September and all of the kiddies have gone back to school. With all of that free time, what ever will you do? Start checking out this month’s new offerings… SEPTEMBER 2 We begin with somewhat of a slow start to the month, with only limited quality releases arriving. The Frat Party DVD from Linkin Park is sure to be a fan favorite… The Ravonettes hop on the Chain Gang of Love... Fellow newcomers Hey Mercedes somehow Loses Control… And there will be a tribute album titled The Light of Day, which pays homage to the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. SEPTEMBER 9 Okay…here’s where things start to pick up a
bit. Following up his I
Get Wet debut, Andrew W.K.
will unleash The Wolf… Texas blues/rock legends ZZ Top return this month with the long awaited and much delayed Mescalero…
Pennywise rise up From
The Ashes… The Chieftains start their journey Further
Down the Old Plank Road… Folkie Joan
Baez will serenade us all with Dark
Chords on a Big Guitar… And Shelly
Harris will be first in line as Dance
of Death comes to stores from British metal gods, Iron Maiden… The final re-issue of the AC/DC catalog arrives on the 9th.
The Bonfire boxed-set, a four-CD compilation, has been
re-mastered and is ready to go… Breakout star John Mayer attempts to follow up his debut success of the Room For Squares release with his new effort, Heavier Things… To round out the second Tuesday in September, KISS will release the DVD of Alive IV. Recorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Alive IV album has already gone gold around the globe, and this DVD will provide the visuals to what was a remarkable feat in the KISS legacy. SEPTEMBER 16 The big story of the
16th is the new album from David
Bowie. The title – Reality – has been laid
on what is Bowie’s seventh studio release in the last decade. The
Rock Chameleon chimes to ICE Magazine that -- “It’s
my best album since 1980!” For some reason, some artists are rushing their Christmas CDs to the stores way early! Mary-Kate & Ashley Olson, as well as Barry Manilow have new efforts geared towards the coming holiday season… both of which I’ll pass on. Rush will not only release a three CD set of
live material titled, In
Rio, but a DVD from the show as well…
A DVD is on the way featuring The
Complete Masterworks of Tenacious D…
Pearl Jam has a live CD
due out on this day as well. Aretha
Franklin will tell the world why she’s So Damn Happy. SEPTEMBER 23
The
Eyes Of Alice Cooper… comes
to us
from legendary shock-rock pioneer Alice
Cooper on this day… The
Bangles (that’s right…I said The
Bangles!) plan to start a Doll
Revolution… Fuel
makes their Natural
Selection… WWIII has begun, and KMFDM
started it… Dave Matthews goes solo and proves
that he’s Some Devil… Nickelback
starts up The Long Road to have another hit single… A five-CD box set
from Motorhead will surface…
A
Best of... from the near defunct Pantera
is ready to close the books on that great metal band… A DVD from Sammy
Hagar & The Waboritas titled, The
Long Road to Cabo is ready for your viewing pleasure. Here’s a good one…
Sanctuary has decided to re-release Kelly
Osbourne’s debut album, Shut
Up, this month. The
real question is…WHY? A turd in a new
package is still a turd. Who
knows… maybe this time the album has a better singer! SEPTEMBER 30 Well, the month
started slow, and it will end slowly as well. New albums from Sting,
Iggy Pop, Bette Midler, and Throttlehead
seem to be the only releases worth mentioning… so I’ll leave it at
that. As I end this month, I
regret to inform all of the Midwest
BEAT’s faithful readers that I will be taking a short hiatus
from my duties writing this column. By
the time this issue is in your hands, I will be in San Antonio, TX going
through basic training for the United States Air Force. I assure you that
my words will grace these pages again by year’s end.
Feel free to write me at -- davegrove@midwestbeat.com.
I will be checking my mail sometime in October, and I will
graciously answer all those who write me during this major transition.
I am proud to be serving our great country, and defending our
freedom as a member of the Air Force. Please take a moment
from your busy day on September
11th to remember the lives lost in the tragedy that changed our world
two short years ago. God Bless America. Thank you all for reading. I'll see you all again soon.
