MICHAEL
D. TOBIN
Advertising Sales
A lifelong resident of Highland, Michael went through the town's public
school system and it was there that he first became interested in music.
He joined the Middle School Band and eventually went on to perform in
the Highland High Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pep Band and Concert Band.
Like any other teenager, he was really into rock 'n'
roll and among his favorite artists were Rush, Judas Priest, Ted Nugent
and AC/DC. Eventually, he took to playing bass guitar with a group
of like-minded teen friends, jamming in the basement and covering the
songs of his rock heroes.
In 1981, Michael formed the group Assassin after
meeting another inspired young Highland rocker named Jim Hillegonds.
That band banged around the region for a while before life got in the
way of rock 'n' roll aspirations and dreams.
Assassin eventually parted ways. Hillegonds
went on to become the "Bon Scott" figure of the regional AC/DC
tribute band, Bonfire." Michael started a family and
put both his feet solidly into the "real world" but never
stopped loving rock 'n' roll.
"I always kept reading The BEAT and later the
Midwest BEAT to keep up on what was happening in the local rock
world," said Tobin. "I wished that I could in some way
contribute and some way get involved in the local music scene again.
One day it hit me, that with my many years of sales experience, I
could sell advertising for Midwest BEAT and help keep our local scene
alive." In January 2003, he became a part of the BEAT family.
Michael came out of the gates roaring and brimming with enthusiasm.
He brought three new accounts into our pages his very first month on
board.

CATHY MEIN

On the heels of working as a child model for
several years, Cathy Mein found herself singing in bands while in
college and during her early twenties.
Deciding she preferred listening to music and
being around musicians more than being in the spotlight, she left the
bands, traded in the Journalism degree she was working on for a
Bachelors Degree in Business and started a job in marketing after
graduation.
Within a few years of working in the business
world she found herself frequently being asked by musicians she knew to
assist with marketing and public relations for their bands on the side
of her full-time job, which she happily obliged.
Currently working as Vice President of Marketing
for a Chicago-based corporation and slowly completing studies for her
MBA, Cathy also does marketing, promotions and public relations as a
consultant for small companies, individuals and musicians.
Cathy came to Midwest Beat when she was asked to
interview a musical act for a website that went through changes and
consequently couldn't use her interview. Wanting to keep her promise to
promote the band, she sought out exposure for the interview at Midwest
Beat.
Impressed with her writing and ethics, Midwest
BEAT publisher/editor Tom Lounges invited Cathy to join the magazine as
a Staff Writer and she has found herself interviewing artists such as
Collective Soul, The Fray, Train and Mat Kearney a at shows.
A music fan at heart, Cathy can frequently be
found at concerts around the Chicago area and traveling to see favorite
musicians around the country.
If you would like to provide feedback about any
interviews Cathy has written or suggest musicians to be interviewed, she
can be contacted at:

CORINE JURGERSON
CD REVIEW EDITOR & STAFF WRITER
Corine Jurgerson joined the staff of The Midwest Beat in 2004.
Since joining the team, she’s found herself interviewing acts such as --
Green Day, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, Rise Against, OK GO, Finch and
others – for our pages.
Corine also occasionally reviews CDs for us, contributes live concert
reviews to our web reviews section, and contributes concert photography
from time to time to our Scrapbook section.
When she’s not writing about musical artists, Corine works full-time for
a small public relations firm. Although the press she generates for her
clients is of an entirely different nature than the entertainment press
she really loves to scribe, media is her niche and she wouldn’t work in
any other field.
Prior to working at the PR firm, she’s worked in television and video,
producing corporate/marketing videos for both small and large companies
across Chicagoland. She’s also worked for The Walt Disney World
Corporation in Orlando, Florida and contributed on a freelance basis at
“The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Ultimately, she would like to become an artist
publicist.
